i have been experimenting around this issue this weekend.
using mp4creator, i have tried to adjust the level using the "-mpeg4-video-profile=" switch. this seems to have no effect. the extracted .h264 file from an mkv, still has the same level once added to an mp4 container.
i have seen others using hexedit apps to change this, though i am led to believe that it is only the PS3 that is fooled by this. i am intending to change my library as i no longer have my PS3, but an appletv, so obviously this isnt possible, let alone desirable, because...
i was under the impression that the specific settings applied when first encoding the video track is what sets this. and they all have different feature sets, options, compressability, etc. you cant simply change this level, the whole thing would need re-encoding. am i correct?
with this also in mind, does anyone know if appletv is only 3.1 or if it can handle 4.1 too? (all handbrake encodes seem to be 3.1) also, is it intended that the next incarnation of the appletv hardware will have true 4.1 or 5.1 capabilities, by throwing a better processor in the box or something?
