Hi,

I'm buying LCD monitor 19" Which one is better for encoding, LCD 19", 4:3 or Wide?

Thanks in advance

wide is better, since it carries this symbolic value, saying: this user is not a typical office guy.

@smoke3,

Literally lauged out loud (at my office, looking at my lame, company issued 4:3 dell LCD Haha).

I have to say that I agree, wide is better, but also from the practical standpoint that most moives are some form of widescreen, and in my opinion will really just look much better/more appealing to the eye on a widescreen.

ONLY wide!!!! BTW Native resolution for 19'' is not 4:3 but 5:4 (1280x1024) So in my opinion it is even worse than 4:3 :)
Also DON'T buy gloss panels because you will get annoying mirror effect :) At the moment I would recommend LG or Samsung. I have this model http://www.komputronik.pl/Wolters_Kluwer/19_LG_Flatron_L194WT_SF/pelny,id,31290/ . It has dvi and it is very cheap!

I have both aspect ratios:
- 5x4 17" LCD -> good for all office stuff and especially reading loooong documents
- 16x10 24" biggo Sony CRT -> for all my image(photo) and video stuff.

When it comes to moving images 4:3 is yesterdays shape.... It's 16:9 (or 16:10 for monitors below 22") or nothing ;)

Bigger always means better :)

If I needed 22'' I would definatelly buy this one http://www.komputronik.pl/Monitory_LCD/22_LG_Flatron_L227WT_PF/pelny,id,49180/
It has excellent user reviews!

Thanks allot once again,

One more think to ask, what would be the good value for sharpening, contrast, brightness...of monitor, to get the right result with filters?

The are many tools and reference clips to calibrate your monitor properly. This needs to be done for each monitor separately!

Also, if you get a big LCD screen, like 22" Widescreen, get prepared that your old encodes will look horrible, while they looked reasonable on your old screen ;)

Compression artifacts become MUCH more visible on a big screen, especially on a LCD screen (compared to a CRT one).

They started using 22" widescreens at our office a while back.. I'm one of the few guys still having the old screen but mostly I work on my 17" notebook screen nowadays (a glossy one actually - it's more a matter of adjusting the angle at which you look at it in function of the backlight and your brain somehow manages to blend out annoying reflections pretty quick. If you cannot avoid the sun shining directly on your display, a non glossy one is to be prefered though).
