So, what's the deal with QuickTime X? It seems to be pretty much the same useless QuickTime player, with some new codec support added.

Is the jump to ten ("X") justified because of some additional codec support?

Don't confuse the QuickTime player with the QuickTime framework.

You might not like the player but you can't deny the framework is unbeatable.

It's a complete rewrite of the QuickTime framework. It will be at last 64bit and remove all the crappy stuff from '90. But there aren't many details known at the moment. It's like what Microsoft is doing with Direct Media Foundation.
And yes, QuickTime Player will probably continue to suck on Windows.
