Hi,

I have a LiteOn SOHW-1653S which was very good when released, but it is PATA and I just got a new system which is SATA, and the jmicron controller has issues recognising my old PATA device.

So im looking for a new DVD+-RW burner that is good quality. Seems like not many companies are making them these days, but Sony/NEC and Pioneer seem to be still going. Does anyone have any recommendations?

LiteOn still makes 'em, so if you were happy with the previous drive, why not get one from the same manufacturer again? Personally I've been using Samsung and NEC for DVD burners since I switched to SATA and they worked out fine, too.
Due to my move to Blu-ray I'm now using LG super multi blue drives.. so far no issues either but my NAS boxes reduced my burning activity to a minimum.
