View Full Version : allocate more bits toward faster motion frames in anime

Hi there,

I've been encoding some anime at very low bitrates (~300-350 kbps for a 640x480 video) and using the x264: Unrestricted 2pass Anime_Toons HQ profile in MeGUI.

The results have been amazing but I noticed that high motion scenes tend to suffer while scenes that have a lot of still motion look sharp and crisp. Is there anyway to tweak the options to allocate less bits toward the still motion frames and more toward the faster motion frames.

I've tried adjusting Bitrate Variance to 4 and Quantizer Curve Compression to 0.3 but the results are still not what I am hoping for. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

you can encode using zones, megui is setup to do this easily

Eek, I'm such a noob. Adjusting Bitrate Variance for a 2 pass encode won't do anything. I just read that Bitrate Variance is only for an ABR encode. Suggestions are still welcome though..

Is there an option for that in the x264 configuration editor? I don't see one.

look for the 'edit zones' button :) it's in the top box beside file format

Raising qcomp, not lowering qcomp, is what you want to do.

Ah, I see it, thanks. I guess I'm still learning my way around MeGUI. So this means that I can manually enter the range of frames for each zone and set the quantizer for each zone? Is there anyway to set the codec to estimate motion and do this automatically during a 2 pass encode?

I haven't watched some of the episodes I'm compressing so I don't always know where the high motion scenes are.

Raising qcomp, not lowering qcomp, is what you want to do.

Ah, I see, I was doing the exact opposite:o. So raising it to 1.0 would give constant quality throughout low and high motion scenes? I'll give it a try.

the edges of ome objects in dark scenes look bad (looks like ringing maybe).

This has nothing to do with this thread.
