View Full Version : Do I IVTC?

I've encoded around 20+ movies using Nandub (framserving from FlaskMPEG) and all of them have turned out to be quite good, but I was trying to encode 'Memento' and the Divx turned out to be interlaced and jerky.
So I decided to switch to GKnot to see if the extra video options might help to alleviate the problem. The video source info I got from GKnot is Framerate: 29.97, Video Type: NTSC and Interlaced. My question is how should I configure the video options to remove the jerkiness and interlacing. I can only think of 2 logical ways:
1. Choose ForceFilm (to make it 23.37 frames) and then choose 'Smart Deinterlace'. I tried this combo and the video looks less jerky but is still interlaced.
2. Do not choose ForceFilm and choose only IVTC. Do I have to select 23.37 fps in the drop-down box next to the 'Open' button on the 'Bitrate' tab?
Please advise as I'm at my wit's end. Thanks.

You don't get those values from GKnot, you get them from DVD2AVI.
But...
You might try your preview (F5) after setting the start position to the middle of the content with the [ key. The leaders on the content might be 29.97 Interlaced video ... but the rest of the content may be telecined film.

Sorry. I got the info from DVD2AVI.
I'm pretty sure that the video is 29.97 and interlaced, cos I tried encoding the first vob file in Nandub, framserving from FlaskMPEG. Flask detected it as 29.97 but I changed it to 23.37, with 'rebuild progressive images' turned on. The result is awful. Video is super jerky, frames get dropped and interlaced, and the end result is that the audio is much slower than the video.
I'm new to GKnot, so if dvd2avi says the Video Type is NTSC, do I use ForceFilm or do I use IVTC? What is the difference between ForceFilm, IVTC and deinterlace? Thanks.

try the preview with force film on and of in dvd2avi and you will see if the force film works or not.
and when using force film you should not use deinterlace because if you see any interlacing then the force film option doesnt work.
then you have to select to choose no frame processing and sett a inverttelecine in gknot.
try with diffrent settings and diffrent ivtc plugins and see witch one works best for memento.

I have tried re-encoding without using Force Film, so the DVD2AVI produced avs is 29.97fps. I use only IVTC. There's no interlacing now, but the final video came out to be 11.988fps (!), which makes it look super jerky. Is 29.97fps the only way for me to go now?

If the source is not "FILM" per dvd2avi, I'd leave it at 29.97 and stop attempting to chop out needed frames. Then it won't jerk.

Oh great. Now I can't even start encoding. When I click 'Add job', there's an error - 'Access violation at address 00416EF3 in module 'GORDIANKNOT.EXE'. Read of address FFFFFFFF. This is making me hate GKnot.

1) Don't blame Gknot. Blame M'soft. TheWEF is much more responsive to us than Bill Gates. I can count the answers Bill's made to questions in this forum on less than one hand.
2) Reboot.
3) You can always execute dvd2avi manually. TheWEF included it in his START menu under Apps ....

I've tried rebooting. The problem is not with DVD2AVI. The error message comes up when I press 'Start Encoding' in GKnot. After I press the OK button for the error message, GKnot just goes back to the Encoder tab and does nothing.

UHT - Thanks for your advice. Deleted GKnot directory and its working again. :)
I'm trying out Donald Graft's Decomb filter. Seems to have solved my interlace and IVTC problems. I'll do a full encode and see how it turns out.

The full encode is out (but oversized though). Using Donlad Graft's Decomb, Telecide and Decimate filters, it totally solved my problems. No more interlacing and the video is down to 23.xx fps and the video is smooth. I would recommend the filters to anyone who has problems with interlacing and IVTC. Forget about using ForcedFilm in DVD2AVi and the IVTC in GKnot. DG's filters does a significantly better job.
Thanks all for your advice and suggestions. :)

Sorry, a bit of a noob here.
DigDub, from your description, sounds like I have a similar problem as you. I tried both of those methods you mentioned and the resultant was still unsatisfactory. You mentioned Donlad Graft's Decomb, Telecide and Decimate filters, where exactly do I find them, and more importantly, a guide for using them? (hope it's not too complicated)
Thank you in advance,
Sam:)

I found the discussion thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14011
The link to the Decomb filter is:
http://sauron.mordor.net/dgraft/decomb.html
The Decomb filter includes the Decomb.dll, Telecide and Decimate filters.
Follow the above-mentioned discussion thread. It explains how to use the filters in GKnot. Basically, just add the filters in Avisynth. Remember to place Telecide and Decimate BEFORE cropping, or else you will get Access Violation error when Nandub starts doing its encoding work. Its really simple to use. Good luck.
