I was curious, I'm lookign into getting a 6-speaker surround sound system for my computer but I was wondering if all the audio features from the movie still work when you rip and encode a dvd?? Like will I still get dolby digital surround sound from a ripped movie as the same if I was watching the DVD??
thanx.

As long as you use a software decoder that supports AC3 speaker output and a compatible soundcard that gives 5.1 output and you encode your movie with AC3 sound your system you will get 5.1 sound with your movie, this has worked without a problem on my machine.

My setup is a Sound Blaster Audigy! Platinum sound card, and Creative Inspire 5.1 Digital 5700 speakers. The sound card was $150, the speaks were ~$240. As a result, every movie I rip I use the 5.1 channel audio track for the audio stream. The AC3 audio may take up to 40% of your 2 or 3 CD rip, but I didn't pay $400 to encode to Lame 3.91 VBR :)
The sound appears to be great. The Dolby receiver works like a charm, and autodetects and switches itself for Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic, and DTS audio.
You'll need to download the AVI/AC3 audio filters from doom9's download section for playback of an AVI with an AC3 sound track, and I recommend that you use PowerDivX for viewing your DivX/AC3 movies, as I gather that's what it was built for.

Although I don't have the set of speakers just yet, my WMP6.4 plays my AVI's just fine or do you mean just for the Dolby Digital sound and all my movies that I've done have been in AC3 audio format and haven't had a problem with playback yet. So with that said do I still need the AVI/AC3 audio filters as well as PowerDivX to get the audio quality I will be looking for when i get my speakers.
thanx.

If you mean encoding to divx AC3 works without a problem but I havent been able to use DTS sound on divx.
if I remember right I was able to even mux the video with dts sound but no decoder for the sound when you try to play the movie.
but it was a long time ago I tried so I dont remember if it is the exact scenario.
but I know that I was not able to use DTS with divx but AC3 just works flawlessly

I think Gabest (the man who made MPC and Vobsub/VSfilter) has made a DTS (and AC3) parser/filter.
Check out his "guliverkli" project for more info.
