Hi to everyone! :)
First off, I say sorry in case my question can sound obviously to someone but I always feel like a newbie when I'm doing those kind of things.
okay...is there any way, using d2s, to encode just a small "chunk" of a ripped DVD?
I mean, image you have ripped an entire DVD and you want take just a clip (about a ten minutes or something) from it.
How should I proceed?
Can I use ProjectX and/or Cuttermaran to open and cut the desired clip from the larger *.VOB file in the ripped DVD and later than import the *.mpg into d2s to remake a DVD?

Hope someone of you will help me to make my mind clear...
Thanks,
Stefano. :o

Hey Stefano,

first of all, if you already ripped the whole DVD and want to make a new DVD using just a small clip from the original, why would you want to reencode it? Even if you reencode with a much higher bitrate than the original, you would still NOT achieve a higher quality. The only reason to reencode is if you need to apply filters, resizing etc.

Your idea to demux and then using software like Cuttermaran is right on the money, but there is an even faster and easier method:

Use DGIndex and load the VOB file(s) of your original DVD. Now use the "[" and "]" buttons to select the range you want. Under "Audio" select "Demux all tracks", then go to the "File" tab and click "Save project and demux video".

You will end up with the demuxed video and audio elementary streams of your selected range plus the d2v index file. The index file is useless, you can delete it. Use an authoring application (like Muxman) to create a new DVD structure from your elementary streams and burn it. Quick and easy...:)

Hi manolito :) and I really say thanks to you for all the time that you're "wasting" with me! I'm really appreciating all that.
You got exactly what I really wanted to do:
...make a new DVD using just a small clip from the original...
Thanks for the easy solution you suggested to me, I see what you mean using DGIndex. I'll give a try as soon!
Just one more question:
you said that: ...using software like Cuttermaran is right... so Cuttermaran is able to open *.VOB files, can it? In case yes, what procedure should I follow?

Many thanks again,
Stefano.

No, Cuttermaran (like most MPEG editing software) can only handle elementary streams. If you need an application which handles VOBs or MPEG files directly, have a look here:
http://www.womble.com
Their products can all do this, even the old (and cheap) MPEG-VCR software. And they have free 30day trial versions for download.

Hi manolito thanks for your reply!
I had a look of those software but I think that I'll just follow you first idea to demux using DGIndex...

Anyway thanks again for all! :)

P.S.
Let me ask you one more question. :p
Have never used a script called "FFT3DFilter" to encode? What does it meant for?
Here it is the thread where I read about that
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1248371#post1248371
Make any sense for me to use it?

We are getting OT again...
I can't use FFT3DFilter simply because my computer is waaaay too slow. Whenever a plugin changes my speed scale from FPS to SPF (seconds per frame) I have to pass, sorry....

Well, FFT3DFilter is a very good denoiser (and optional sharpener) from Avisynth guru Fizick. Here is the main FFT3D thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=573156#post573156
And this is Fizicks download page where you can find tons of information about the plugin: http://avisynth.org.ru/fft3dfilter/fft3dfilter.html

@stenews

Hi!

As an alternative to the suggestion by "Manolito", if you need an application which handles VOBs or MPEG files directly, try the excellent freeware program "MPEG2Cut2.exe" (NOT to be confused with the older "MPEG2Cut.exe")...

Hi setarip_old thanks for your reply!
I just had a look of it and I believe that is a really great application.
I really didn't know about it...

Many thanks again for your help too!
Stefano.

I don't suppose anyone thought of using DVD Shrink or Ner0 Recode in re-author mode. Set the start and end points and press Encode. It will output a little 10 minute (or wehatever) DVD for you from your original. No need for demuxing and remuxing or anything like that.

Hi blutach and thanks to have posted over this thread.

What you suggested to do is pretty interesting too... but I have to ask you something about Nero Recode.
When I first installed Nero 8 I used the custom installation mode and I have unchecked Nero Recode from the whole package.
Now I'm wondering if I can add it to my current Nero distribution without the risk to see messed up my working installation! or if I can in case to install the latest Nero Recode's distribution as a stand alone application without take care about what I have already installed.

Could you help me in that?
Thanks a lot,
Stefano.
