My favourite is 98se,nice and small and neat and I like the 16-color Windows Classic style.

I wonder how many people agree with me :)

Vista. Then 2K. Then XP.

Vista. I am tired of XP theme, and Windows 7 looks like KDE 4 which I don't like.

Yep and it looks like something from stone age :)
I voted for 7

Again (as this question appeared also on another forum) - for me icons are irellevant to anything.

So I voted for 3.1.

IMHO there's not much important difference (style-wise) between Windows 9x, Windows ME and Windows 2000.
They look plain and simple. No unnecessary bling-bling, just the classical Windows look. Anyway, it looks a bit "antiquated" today.
Perfect to concentrate on your work, but nothing to get excited about.

With Windows XP they introduced a more "easygoing" style, but I think the original Luna theme looks a bit childish nowadays.
The Royale theme of MCE looks cleaner, but still not perfect.

Vista has a "modern" looking style and it's much darker than the previous Windows versions - all the light colors replaced by black.
There also is a lot of useless bling-bling, but overall it doesn't look too bad. Cleaner and more "professional" than Windows XP.
From what I've seen, Windows 7 basically keeps that style, but got rid of some annoyances.

I currently run Windows XP x64-Edition with a Vista-inspired theme. So I get a nice style with a lightweight OS in the background.
Since this poll is about style only, my vote goes for Windows 7 here...

XP with Zune theme and obviously, no background image (deep black).

Windows Classic style in XP, so I voted for Win2K. I hate anything other than the traditional 9x/2000 start menu.

yep, XP with classic, so i put win 2000 too. Its so much cleaner than the other styles.
I dont like the teletubby style of XP's default theme, it looks like its for kids.
Windows 7 is ok, but im still prefer 2000, perhaps it will grow on me.

Define icon/graphic style.

If you are talking about strictly icons, then ME & 2000 belong together because they use the same icon set. 95 & 98 use the same icons. Also, for icons, there is "Plus!" for 95, which is available in 98 w/out the plus pack (cool.dll) , but not enabled by default. For icons, I like the Plus! icons best, but the XP set is tolerable. Even Vista icons are ok after I change them to regular size.

For window style, I use a windows classic style with gradient effects removed. The default colors for classic in 2000/XP are the ones I prefer, but you can make 95 through XP look that way. I'm a big fan of this style, but classic on 6.x looks wrong and I don't like it.

In short, I like the Plus! icon set with classic style and XP/2000 color scheme with gradient titles removed.

I use WinXP with the "Crystal Aero (http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9230/clipboard01pl4.png)" theme...

But actually I'd prefer some simplistic + customizable vector based UI!

Deep black? As your brain? (joke)

Could not resist.

I like the cleaner, darker look of Windows 7, but I would rather have the GUI used in CSI: Miami :)

As we talk about it... I wish they'd get rid of the start menu and replace it with some customizable menu bar! Like, taskbar (with open windows, tray icons and clock) at the bottom, and a program menu (with shortcuts to drives etc.) at the top. Here is some cheap "5 minutes in paint" visualization of my idea -> Link (http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/9960/topmenubaree0.png) I found a way to mod WinXP to look like this. All you need is some prog to hide the start menu like StartKiller (http://www.tordex.com/startkiller/), and something to add a 2nd customizable menu bar (I used FreeLaunchBar (http://www.freelaunchbar.com/)). :)

Soulhunter, you reminded me I still haven't got over menus that go bottom up.

What is really funny that I have the same Zune XP theme with black background image. I didn't notice that before.

Too bad you've limited this poll to "Windows" (BTW - You overlooked "Windows for Workgroups" v.3.11) - My vote for the best Microsoft desktop would be a large white square, blinking in the upper left corner of a black screen, silently challenging you to key in something to put the computer through its paces ;>}

Win2K for me. "Less is more"!
