automated editing?

I am just wondering what the level of software to do automated editing is? If you want to edit say...500 frames and just add something or change the color of an object, that moves along a line, can you just do this one and then automatically calculate how to do it for the other frames? Or must it still be done per each frame. Is there any sort of "tracking" software in expensive video editing software?

most composers and some editing packages have support for keyframeing and also the way that data interpolates via two keyframes for example. There are other ways as well, like builtin scripting.

tracking is in some versions of after fx i belive, high-end packages does that better thought (think something like autodesk smoke*)
