Can the aspect ratio of an AVC video or its TS container be altered without reencoding?

For example, it has a 2.35:1 image in a 1.78:1 frame, but the image should be 2.20:1, so the frame must be changed to 1.90:1 to correct the difference.

This can be corrected during playback in MPC-HC, but correcting the file would allow proper playback on a stand-alone device such as NMT/Popcorn Hour.

You could try setting the DAR in mkvtoolnix, using .mkv container. Many software players will accept this, but I am unsure if Popcorn Hour will accept the container set DAR

I suppose it is worth a try if only for temporary playback but I prefer to keep them in TS. Taking a quick look, would the AR to be entered be 2.20 or 1.90?

I'm not sure. It should take a minute to test it out on a sample clip, and another minute to see if Popcorn Hour accepts the DAR signalling. Let us know :)

Alas, I do not have a Popcorn Hour yet. But if that happy occasion comes about I will follow up.
