Today I got IE8 RC-1 through Windows Update. Just to find out that it's still buggy

Nope, I've gone back top using IE exclusively.
I was using both IE and Firefox, but then last month I caught a fricken' root kit from a banner ad that I didn't even click on. It probably was NOT Firefox's fault, but I was pissed off so I decided to blame it.

If it really came from a "banner" and that banner was a simple GIF/PNG/JPEG banner, then this would indicate an exploit in Firefox (in the version you were using at that time) indeed.
However if it was a Flash banner, which I assume, then this would indicate an exploit in Adobe's Flash plugin, which basically is the same one for all browsers!
With the recent Zero-Day-Exploit in mind and how long it took them to finally release the bugfix, IE really is the very last browser I'd use for "security" reasons
Even the Federal Office for Information Security (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundesamt_f%C3%BCr_Sicherheit_in_der_Informationstechnik) did recommend to not use InternetExplorer, because of that serious exploit...

opera... and keep it up to date.
chromium/chrome is not a bad choice too (keep it up to date as well...).
IE is the most unsecure software ever created.
