I'm using DVD Decrypter to demux the dvd into a .M2V Mpeg-2 stream and a .VOB audio container, like I do for all of my dvds. For some reason the .M2V file when played in WMP has closed captioning, which isn't available on the DVD. If I play the file in PowerDVD, they aren't there. When played in WMP or using graph studio, they are, and I can't see any subtitle streams which it could be coming from. It's like they are hard subed, but PowerDVD magically removes them.

Ok, so it was because WMP was using ffdshow which had subtitles enabled, but I still don't understand how a raw MPEG-2 stream can have a subpicture.

The closed captioning in DVDs is actually embedded into the elementary stream. There's obviously no line 21, but part of the frame header in NTSC discs includes an optional closed caption field.

Btw, in case of subtitle weirdness in the future, ffdshow grabs any likely looking subtitle files from the current folder and a set of predefined folders and displays them.
