View Full Version : Audio Encoding Question v0.18.3 (beta)

Can somebody please clarify what can we expect from the different audio options of the new beta release. I got a bit confused now.
Audio Encoding Options:
1) Do not convert DTS to AC3
2) Do not reencode AC3
3) Use 640 Kbps for AC3 encoding.
I thought option (2) was actually doing 640Kbps.
Thanks,
From Jdobbs in a different thread....
Currently if you get:
By default everything is converted to AC3, with 5.1 encoded at 448Kbs and Stereo encoded at 192Kbs.
Selecting "Do not convert DTS to AC3":
DTS HD or DTS HD Master --> DTS (at a high bitrate determined by source)
Selecting "Do not reencode AC3":
True HD and AC3 Plus --> AC3 (at a high bitrate determined by source)
If you set the 640Kbs option, 5.1 (DTS or AC3) is reencoded at 640Kbs, unless one of the above is selected.

No option 2 does exactly what it says. It doesn't reencode ac3. It takes the input ac3, and puts it in the output. No encoding done. While option 3 will encode the audio. Option one says that if the incoming file is DTS, then don't touch it and put it in the output.

Exactly, you can't do option "3" if you do option "2"...
For example, if you did option "3" only your AC3 audio would be encoded at 640k...
If you didn't do any "options" your AC3 audio would be encoded at 448k (the default for BD Rebuilder).
If you did option "2" only your AC3 would be untouched and the bitrate it is on your original disc.
You can't do option "3" and "2" together obviously ;)

If you selected option 2 and 3 together, option 2 would have precedence, so you'd get the original.

Maybe option 3 should be disabled in the UI when option 2 is selected. That would avoid some confusion on the user's part.

so if you pick option 2 you may lose picture quality

If you are planning to write to DVD+-R I would highly recommend you leave everything at the defaults. The audio that is on BD is often way to big for DVD -- and if you keep it intact you will sacrifice video quality for audio improvements that are (frankly) imperceptable. If you're writing to BD-25 -- its no big deal either way.
That'll bring arguments from all the guys with "magic ears" -- but reality is reality and all the double blind tests seem to disagree with them -- especially if you choose 640Kbs. Personally I put those "I can hear the difference" reports in the same category as "UFOs are stealing my luggage and feeding the bags to Bigfoot, I saw it myself".
JMHO (ok, maybe not so humble) :) But to each his/her own - I'll eventually enable whatever anybody wants. Right now I want to limit the variability of the output so I can get past the beta stage.
If you're really worried about it -- just use the 640Kbs encoding option for audio -- at least you can then say "it's better than DVD" or "it's HD audio".

I did option 2 then option 1 and 2 on Independance day and both were 448 after processing. I had a BD-25 target size I was hoping for the full audio. I'm not sure if it is a bug or I set something up wrong

My Independence Day only lists DTS HD 5.1 master Audio, so you may indeed have done something wrong. ?

is this after you processed it?

Can the selection to leave DTS intact be fine tuned later to say, leave DTS Core intact, as opposed to DTS-HD
Or does BD not contain the core track?

Thats exactly what it does extract the DTS core, so if you choose not to re-encode DTS you would be left with the DTS core (i think thats how it works..???), in no way should you end up with 448kbps ac3 track.

It may do the AC3 encode during the process (for reasons of my own), but the original core DTS will be used in the remux because of the option selected.

I'll have to try it again with 18.8 because I ended up with 448 it may have been DTS:confused:

it's from a file I remuxed. I could do it off the disc it's just more steps. I have everything archived in remuxed files. They for the most part have worked great when saving to BD9 with 448 audio.
click the link I posted an image it may be what you are looking for

No, I'd like to see that the output says... that image is of the source.

also this is from a ISO archive I mounted the disc with VCD. Over the weekend I will try it off the disc (original)
I don't know how to give you the info you need

I'm currently doing ID4. Here is the grab.
The 2 ac3 stereo tracks are just commentary.

I think I figured out my problem I had the "Stricter AVCHD compliance for movie-only option" check that somehow stopped it

I updated my first post with an answer from Jdobbs from page 56 of BD-RB bugs thread.
