copying my first dvd using dvd2svcd error appeared after about 85% saying I/O ERROR 23. can anyone help

I believe I/O 23 is a rip failure.
Try SmartRipper and then use the way described in the Q + A to proceed. It is for combining 2 DVD discs, but most is relevant to your situation. Just proceed after all the text editing.
This does happen sometimes and when it does SmartRipper seems to be able to get around the error that the other rippers cannot.
However whenever possible use the internal routines.

If this fails I suspect you have a bad disc.

i used to get this error all the time. this means that a sector on your disk cannot be read or si bad. you need to use smart ripper to rip the dvd. and if that doesnt work u have to use sector extractor. sector extractor works ALL the time. con is that you have to do it file by file and manually. hope this helps.
