I had an interesting time on the weekend trying to resolve CCE crashes on a new PC. I 'upgraded' to an AMD XP1700+. Life was more simple with Intel. I have spent about a week trying to get everything working together and I have come to a couple of conclusions about hardware and I thought I'd start a thread related to Hardware and CCE.

I bought an Abit KRA7A-Raid and I run the following

XP 1700+ at 140MHz
768 MB Cas2 RAM
SCSI Adaptec 2940
Plextor SCSI CD
Panasonic 7502 CDR
2x20 GB IBM 7200
1x40 GB IBM 7200
1x12 GB Qantum 7200
Pioneer 106 DVD
Soundblaster Live
some crappy NIC
300w AOpen PS

Originally I had my PC configure with an Intel board and never had a problem. When I first swapped over to my new board I just swapped over the board and fired it up - all was well (CCE was fine) but I was concerned about the crap in Window XP from that process and decided to do a fresh install.

I had a lot of problems getting the SBLive card running and it is now out of my PC. During the process I found SBLive conflicted with my mouse and I swapped it for a USB mouse. With a fresh install and all drivers loaded I could not get CCE stable - it crashed on CRC - fixed that, then it crashed on each pass right at the end (incl VAF creation)- I just got the Microsoft apology page when it crashed. I then loaded several variations of a setup and eventually went for an XP install on freshly formatted disk - no other drivers at all - it still crashed on CCE. Then I found during one pass that the mouse froze - then I recall I had never used the USB mouse on that board before.

I have now removed the mouse and the first DVD has completed successfully. I'm doing the second now and will find out tonight if all is OK.

The mouse was a MS Intellieye 3 but I think it may just be the USB port CCE has problems with. So the learning is to try and solve problems with the simplest configuration that you can set up.

If you have a VIA chipset it's IMPERATIVE you download the latest XP 4 in 1 drivers. These will stabilize your board. You get these from the motherboard manufacturer.

I had the same problem with the 3D implementation on my wife's T-Bird 750 and her Voodoo5500 AGP.

Hope it helps.

I strongly disagree about the Via 4 in 1's if you are running XP.
Do not install the Via 4 in 1's if you run XP.
Only install them if you have elimated all the hardware as a problem and as a last resort.
All other MS OS's do install them.
In all MS OS's do install the AGP 4.10 driver. Even the latest 4 in 1's only have 4.05 version of the AGP driver.
In all cases do not install the IDE miniport drivers unless it's part of the 4 in 1.

It sounds like you are have an ACPI problem. If you are unable to get the system working as is you may have to erase the OS and start from scratch. This time go into the Bios and make sure Plug and Play OS is set to no. Microsoft actually suggests most people do this. Unfortunatley becuase of the way the OS works with the Bios you do have to do a fresh install. Just shutting it off will not work.
On the other hand if it is already set to no you may want to do the same thing and try it at yes.

You are better off going to computer hardware related boards and asking for help there. Try Anandtech.com, amdmb.com and viahardware.com. All have forums. I suggest you lurk a while and read to try and pick up on stuff before posting.

Actually the only problem I had was with getting the SBLive card to work and CCE, everything else was just fine. I am using a standard mouse and not the USB port and all works fine.

I agree with the 4 in 1, they are unnecessary with XP. I am using XP stock standard and everything runs as fast as when I load the 4.37 4 in 1 drivers.

The reason I raised this in the DVD2SVCD forum was to demonstrate how easy it was to get a HW conflict that shows up in no other way than in CCE. Who would suspect a mouse. I have successfully coded several movies now without the mouse.

I'll install the SBLive card again as I thought that was the problem - wish me luck.

For your USB problem do you have the Via USB filter driver installed?
You can get it at www.viahardware.com
It is needed for some USB devices to work correctly with Via Chipsets and I do not believe it is installed as part of XP.

I also had a similar experience with XP, and after several failed encodes trying different thing I finally gave up and reverted back to win2k. Curious though, I also have a USB mouse. Never thought that it might be causing the problems. Too bad this thread didn't start about 2 days earlier and I could have tried getting rid of the mouse. Here's the string of events, to the best of my recollection.

Did installation of xp on freshly formatted hdd. After installing WinDVD, Fireburner, etc, installed DVD2SVCD Version 1.0.5 build 4 full bundle. Tried encode of DVD using internal routines. Failed. Checked forum for related failures and downloaded version 1.0.6 build 1 prerelease 7 bundle. Retried encode of same DVD. Sucess. Encoded 2 or 3 more DVDs without problems. Downloaded and installed version 1.0.6 build 1 bundle. Tried encode of DVD using internal routines. Computer restarted sometime during the encoding process (VAF file was created). Thought just a fluke and did crash recovery. Computer restarted again. Checked forums and installed latest VIA 4 in 1 drivers. Tried again from start. Computer once again restarted sometime after about 80% complete. Thought it may be DVD so tried a different DVD. Same results. Tried encode of first DVD in a different machine with win2k and same version of DVD2SVCD. Completed successfully. Tried one last time from beginning. Still failed. Reformatted HDD and installed win2k, WinDVD, Fireburner, etc., and 1.0.6 build 1 bundle. Tried encode using allready ripped VOBs from previously failed encode. Successful.

When I get a chance, I'll install XP again (this time on a spare hard drive) and disconnect all USB devices and see if the encode problems are still there. I still don't understand why the prerelease worked and the final didn't. Once I get XP reinstalled I'm willing to experiment to help figure out what's going on. I'll post the results to this thread once I have them.

Abit boards and soundblaster cards have a reputation for conflicting with each other.Go to your device manager and disable the SB16 emulation driver or better still dont install this part of the driver at all.
