View Full Version : No MKV and MP4 Thumbnails (tried everything)

Since a while ago i cannot see my thumbnails for my mkv and mp4 files anymore. AVI files work perfectly.

What basically happened is that i have a folder with some avi files in them and some didn't show a thumbnail. At this time mkv and mp4 thumbnails worked. So I used google like always to fix it. Somewhere it said to let windows remake the thumbnails by clearing the thumbnail cache through disk cleanup. I did that and what do you know? All the thumbnails dissapeared. So i was like: Okay... and reinstalled CCCP (the codec pack i had at that moment). I had all standard configs except i didn't install zoom player. Shell extension was enabled and vsfilter too.

So after the install the avi's came back but the mkv and mp4's were gone. So i checked haalli media splitter and Thumbnail Creation was on with offset to 1000 ms.

I removed CCCP and installed only ffdshow and haalli media splitter. Enabled the shell extension and thumbnail creation and still no luck. I went through every google page to find the answer. Tried different tweaks through registry, still no luck.

I always cleaned the reg btw after an uninstall of the codec pack.

I'm running out of ideas here...

Oh yeah, WMP 11 does recognize the files and imports them WITH thumbnails but no offset. So it's basically the first frame of the video only shows.

Help?

Before i forget: I run vista 32 premium. Tell me if i forgot to post any more info.

I also do not want to system restore because i did some things afterwards which i do not wanna loose. Only if it's absolutely the last thing i can do, but i don't think that's the case.

I now found out that for some reason the mp4's came back. I don't know how. I rendered a project in sony vegas with mp4 avc and when i opened the folder the mp4's were back. I don't know if that's the reason though. But there is no offset (is there a fix?). The MKV's are still 'kaput' (broken) and some avi's show the weird xp thumbnail as if there is no program to run it with. You know?... that thumbnail/icon thingy..

relax.. they're coming. I'm not behind my pc 24/7 you know. I have to encode it to mp4 still. I'll have it tomorrow probably because it's rather late now and i don't have a spare 2 hours for encoding.

Just a suggestion, coz i learned from my past epic failures...
Make a global backup just after you installed your preferred OS, all your needed softwares, drivers, updates and stuff and configured everything.
If you have to restore your system, you wont get mad and wont pull your hair... ;)

i don't have a spare 2 hours for encoding.No one's asking you to encode anything now. I asked you to post screengrabs of things you've already created:1) The initial .MP4 you created per your first posted in this thread loaded into GSpot and

2) The most recent .MP4 that you created, according to post #15 here, also loaded into GSpot

I won't post regarding this any further, so as to avoid messing up this thread ;>}
