View Full Version : Lines appearing after video capture

I keep getting lines like this every single time I capture videos now. I've tried numerous uncompressed codecs to record to, but all give me the exact same result. They appear at the very beginning of the video, and then at random times throughout. Which just so happen to be during scenes I want to cut out. ;_;
I'm running an Intel Quad Core Q6600 and my CPU usage never goes over 50%. 4GB of RAM also.
Generally, they alternate in length and colour (usually green or black), but they are *always* horizontal. Sometimes they span the entire video, sometimes a majority, a portion or simply a small random section. They don't discriminate between position either. They're really irritating and I need to have a bunch of videos up in just a few days but this is setting me back.
Anyone able to help? I'm running a Winfast PxDTV2300 H capture card with component input and 480p.

Hi,
The lines could be generated by PCI bus problems. Perhaps due to latency of your capture card or interferences with another one. Try to increase the value of latency up to 180. You can try also to change the slot of your capture card. And, of course, use the latest drivers for your capture card and for the motherboard.

Ah, how do you change the latency?
I'm not very good at solving hardware issues. I mostly only get mild software problems. =p

Hi:
You can try with this tool:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951
Download and installs this freeware tool. Follow the instructions (this web page speaks of video card, you must apply the instructions to your capture card). If your problem is solved by raising latency you can apply the change at startup.
Good luck

Ah, PCI Latency Tool doesn't seem to work with Vista x64. Are there any other tools around? Or can I just change it at startup anyway? Will there be any possible reprucussions?
My capture card is also PCI-E, is it still possible to change the latency?

Sorry, PCI express is a different achitecture than PCI. The concept of latency is different also and the tool I suggest is not valid.
IMHO this lines are originate by short time periods where the card is unable to send video data to the system but now I have no clue why. But you cant try some workarounds:
If you capture in raw uncompressed format you can encode the video with Huffyuv lossless codec in order to reduce traffic to disk (btw defrag disk is another good advice).
Another way to enhance system performance is disabling in windows Vista unneeded services.
And also install the latest drivers for capture card and motherboard (the slot that this type of card uses I think now that is irrelevant).
Good luck.

PCIe also is a switched point-to-point system instead of a bus like regular PCI so devices shouldn't be able to interfere with each other - but of course if the rest of the system somehow takes too long for the device to get it's data into RAM via DMA there might be some dropping of data going on...

I managed to fix the issue. It turns out it was my CPU causing the lines. In order to fix it I needed to use a tool for my motherboard to set the CPU usage preset to "Turbo". Fixed it immediately and even let me use Preview Acceleration in VirtualDub which previously would only give me a green screen.
Thanks for the help guys!
