This is a fresh installation of windows with VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 (build 2542) and if I open any AVI it immediately crashes with an out-of-bound memory access error. It doesnt even give me the option of saving the log. I manage to take a screenshot of the crash after man attempts. Screen shot of the error is below, any help in solving this would be appreciated. I cant edit any of my avi's in VDubMod :(

I just tired nandub 1.0rc2 and there are no issues. Not sure what is going wrong with VDM to make it crash :(

Before you complain about outdated and discontinued forks of VirtualDub, please try the latest official version of VirtualDub:
http://www.virtualdub.org/
(VirtualDubMod is a dead project since 2005 and it's based on an archaic version of VirtualDub. And Nandub is discontinued since 2001)

^ I don understand that VDM is outdated and a dead project. The only reason I use VDM being that I can mux AC3 streams into my avi using VDM which I am not able to do with ViirtualDub. I dont have any crash with VirtualDub.

^ I have disabled output preview, I only have input video preview set. disabling it lets me open the file for muxing. But once I enable input video preview VDM crashes. But I was able to generate the crash report which I am attaching with this post.

^ crashinfo.txt: http://pastebin.com/f549421c6
Enabled both input/output preview. If I open any avi file it just crashes without even giving me an option to save the crashinfo. Only way for me to use it now is to disable both input/output preview (which I dont need for muxing).

But it is! VDubMod was forked from VDub very long ago. Since then the original VDub has seen tons of fixes and improvements!
It's an impossible task to port all these fixes and improvements back to VDubMod, as VDubMod's codebase is far too different from original VDub now.
I think that is one of the reasons why the developers finally gave up on that project.
Also now that VirtaulDub does support Input Plugins (e.g. for MPEG-2, FLV, QuickTime and MKV) the biggest "improvement" of VDubMod over original VDub became superfluous.
In fact the lack of support for Input Plugins is yet another reason to finally drop VDubMod (as if there weren't enough reasons already).

The original version of VirtualDub should be able to do this! At least when the AC3 stream is stored in a WAV container.
Anyway, you can always use AVI-Mux GUI (http://www.alexander-noe.com/video/amg/) or Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164) to mux AC3 streams into your AVI file.
You may even consider switching over to MKV and use MKVtoolnix (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MKVtoolnix) for muxing. It's a great muxing application!

lol, okay. Then you may want to try one of other tools mentioned to mux your AC3 stream :)

^ I will start using AVI-Mux_GUI for AC3s and VBR MP3. I never use CBR MP3.

You can do this with my AC3 input plugin. It allows VirtualDub to load raw .ac3 files via the "audio from other file..." dialog:
