View Full Version : Very dumb question about trimming in Avidemux

Ok, I'm embarassed for having to create a topic to ask this. But it is very simple and apparently won't take much of your time:
How do I cut/trim a .avi file into smaller segments using Avidemux 2.4? I already (managed to) selected the begin and endpoints. What now?

And thanks in advance.

fyi: I'm running it on Win xp SP3.

If you select a starting and ending frame, when you save it will only save the selected frames.

Note that if you just want to cut, you should use the "Copy" mode. Re-encoding is not necessary.

But in that case the first frame of your selected should be an I-Frame and the very last frame(s) in your selection must not be B-Frames.

Why must be I-Frame first? Is there a Smart Copy Feature with Avidemux?

Yup, but only for MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid). Not for all the others.

So in general the first frame of a selection should be an I-Frame, except when re-encoding ;)

Is there a technical limitation why this smartcopy feature cannot be implemented for other codecs (x264, MPEG2)?

For MPEG-2 it should be possible quite easy.

But for H.264 it won't be possible, until frame-accurate access to such streams is implemented in Avidemux!

...and that won't happen before Avidemux 2.6 :scared:
