View Full Version : bad BD disk?

So I just got the Batman Dark Knight BD today. I see that it isn't a Fox disk so I assumed that Anydvd wouldn't have any problems with it. I can't copy it. It get's part way through the process and gives me an error message saying that there was a problem reading from the source. I also tried copying it through explorer and it failed. I can play it with pdvd (yes I installed pdvd for this nonsense after about a year of not using it) and it can play it. I can also play the m2ts file that the movie is located on with MPC. But I can't copy that m2ts file to HDD. Is this a bad disk? I got it online so it would be a hassle to return it, but I will if I need to.
EDIT: I accidentally posted this in the newbie section when I meant to put it in the decrypting forum. If any of the mods see fit, could you move it there? I guess it works here too though.

Hi!
Pure speculation on my part but, since the standard version DVD appears to contain a brand new type/scheme of copy protection (one ripping program referred to "malformed" .VOBs or .IFOs), perhaps "they" have decided to implement another layer of this same type of protection on BluRay discs...

It's likely that this is one of the new BD+ MKBv9 discs.

I watched the movie all the way through last night. There were two places where the movie stuttered. I think they roughly corresponded to where the copy process would fail. I think I'm going to return it.

What happens when you try to demux using a program like TsMuxer of eac3to? Also, have you made sure to upgrade to the newest version of AnyDVD?

I tried demuxing straight from the disk with ec3to and got an error around the same point that I got them when trying to copy to the HDD.

Yes. And on the slysoft forum people are reporting that they have successfully ripped it with the same version I'm using.

@saint-francis
There's also a possibility that your BD reader may be amongst the first to require cleaning.
You might try re-ripping a previously successfully ripped BluRay disc...

This is a very good point. I ripped a DVD today and all went well. I have also copied some movie backups which I burnt to DVD onto my HDD today with that drive just fine. I'll try tinkering with other known good BD's tonight after my nightly movie viewing. I'm not even sure how one would go about cleaning a BD drive. I'm assuming it's just like cleaning a CD drive, but that could be a disastrous assumption.
