i have a movie (dvd source) i wish to show off a small section (like 20 second sequence) that seems to give x264 issues ... would i be able to get away with taking a 20-60 minute encode with that part smack dab in the center (or slightly offset)? or should i just need to do the full encode? i think my non-maxed out settings took a pretty inconvenient amount of time (like 12 hours per pass)

edit: and i may need to do 3-5 encodes at different bitrates...

What "issues" are you talking about?

exceedingly grainy, dark scene ... kinda swims instead of looking like grain...

And you think it will be handled better by including surrounding material?!

Your post is just so vague in its intent that it's really difficult to answer.

well, the other material looks perfect (at least to me). including the ok as well as the impacted part in the encode (but not .. or at most minimally in the sample i post) might distribute bits realistically throughout the encode, including the afflicted section. however, i'm not sure how much is needed to create a realistic distribution of bits throught the film.

You want to grab a sample of the movie which contains the specific troublesome sequence and test that using various methods. That right?

Just trim it: Take a few thousand frames before and after the section. If it's 2000 frames long for the sequence, take a sample of 4000 frames before to 4000 frames after the sequence (~10k frames total)

i'll try that. at least the section is brief and not insane like The Cell's "trip" section (man, i wish the US got/would get a non-EE'd version/remaster).
