View Full Version : DeVeDe for Windows - Interlaced Encoding

During the last couple of days I tested almost every available free one-click application which can create a DVD from DV-AVIs. Ease of use (aimed at DVD dummies) and output quality were the main priorities, and menue creation was also a must.

DeVeDe for Windows was the clear winner (followed by DVDFlick and AVStoDVD).

There is just one thing that really bugged me, and this was the inability to encode interlaced sources keeping them interlaced. The software comes with several good deinterlacers (even YADIF is included), but there are cases where it is preferable to keep the stuff interlaced.

But DeVeDe does allow you to specify additional Mencoder parameters, and after some research I was able to figure out how to encode interlaced using DeVeDe.

Under "File Properties\Advanced Options\Misc" you can enter additional Mencoder parameters. To encode a DV-AVI (interlaced BFF) you need to enter the following text under "-LAVCOPTS":

ildct:ilme:alt:top=0

For TFF sources you have to use "top=1" (or just skip the "top" parameter, "top=1" is the default). Mencoder also supports "top=-1" for automatic detection of field order, but this of course only works with sources which are flagged as TFF or BFF.

I thought I should share this information somewhere because the DeVeDe documentation does not mention it, and the Mencoder docs are scattered all over the Web and are sometimes a little misleading.

Well, it is a honour to see AVStoDVD with bronze medal after such good competitors ;)

BTW, Manolito, what aspects do you think I can improve in AVStoDVD to reach other tools level?

:)

Hey MrC,

the tests I did were for my brother who (while not being computer illiterate) flatly refuses to learn anything about video conversion details. About twice a year he has to convert some DV AVIs to a DVD with a simple menue, and so far I have always walked him through all the steps by phone.

Applying my own criteria AVStoDVD would have scored much better, at least second place...:D

But I do have some suggestions for improving your software. But this is OT for this thread, I will continue in the AVStoDVD thread...

Cheers
