I am running a server and stream to a media player. The server does not need to be running all the time, so I tried to setup "Standby Mode", and set the bio's to "wake on lan". All went well, at first. I turned the media player on, the server would wake up, start streaming, but then it goes back into standby mode within just a few minutes. (I thought it was suppose to stay awake durning use?). I can turn the media player off, then back on, and this process just repeats.

My question is: How to setup the server to "wake up" and stay awake until I am finished using it? or maybe, a better power managing software I could buy?

I am running winXP pro 32bit.
Thank you for any input on this.

It would be easier to help you, if we could know what hardware you use. In particular motherboard chipset and Network Interface Card (NIC) would be a start. BIOS version would also matter in this case as it can control your NIC.

CPU-Z (google for it) would be able to identify your BIOS version.

The motherboard is an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket939 Gaming board. The CPU is an AMD 4800 (if my memory is correct). The chipset is Nvidia nForce4 SLI x16, Northbridge is nvidia nForce SPP100, Southbridge is Nvidia nForce4 SLI. On the network (this motherboard has two) One (this is the one I am waking the computer on) is Nvidia nForce4 SLI built-in Gigabit MAC, the other is Marvell Gigabit LAN controller. Also the BIO version is 1405.

I know this kind of problem is hard to troubleshoot over the internet on a forum, but if you could just point me in a good direction that would be helpful.

Thank you for your time on this.

I'd start by looking in Device Manager at the Network Adapter settings, both under the Power Management tab, and then under Advanced you may have several other places to check (e.g. "Enable PME to OS Controlled", various "Wake On" etc.) You'll probably need to set your Power Options Properties' System Standby to 1 minute or something, then keep trying different settings (starting with Dev Mgr, NIC, PM) one-at-a-time till it works.

This kind of thing can be hard to find in Windows--I wish you luck!
