i read in the mplayer manual that it is possible to use vfw-codec dll's. i'm wondering if it is also possible to use avisynth filter dll's with mencoder???

No, except on Windows and perhaps in Wine (with a win32 build of MEncoder) since MEncoder can be compiled with AviSynth support. But it doesn't work on other operating systems -- probably because AviSynth is not a simple codec and it requires a more complete implementation of the VFW stack.

Luckily mencoder has a great set of filters included :)
