Hello. I was looking into buying some older TV series on DVD recently, and came across a few really good buys----but they're advertised as being on "HDVD9" (a high-compressed DVD format, I was told). I'm tempted to buy a season or two of a TV series, but I'm wondering: Do regular DVD players play these HDVD9 discs?? Thanks!

According to Wiki:
In April 2000, Sonic Solutions and Ravisent announced hDVD, an HDTV extension to DVD.[8] However hDVD failed to gain much popularity.

I'm 99,9% sure this doesn't comply with the Video-DVD specs, hence there's no hDVD support in "regular" DVD players.
Also putting 720p or even 1080p content in the MPEG-2 format on a "normal" DVD-9 media results in crappy quality, unless you reduce the playtime harshly.
Video-DVD's use data rates of ~8 MBit/s, for HD content you'd need ~25 MBit/s ...
I'd recommend: Either get series on "regular" Video-DVD -or- get it on BlueRay (if you already got a BR player).
