The fantastic speed/ transfer rates that this is going to bring will be a joy.
and itīs backward compatible.
I think they had to, or risk alienating every USB 2 owner.

Although 4.8GBps may sound fast, considering its only 10x faster than the current USB 2.0 spec its not that revolutionary (all things considered). I wonder whether that was as fast as they can make it keeping in mind backwards compatibility? Either way, its still a very good much needed thing and hopefully it will be adopted quite quickly.

Does anyone know whether there are royalties involved, and if so are they higher than that of USB 2.0?

As said 10x looks fast but bluray movie size (for ex) is >10x ( specs say 10x possible not exact .... )
