When I choose the Nth Pass in the DivX section of Gordian Knot I get from VDubMod "An unexcpected error has occured (Code -100)"

Can I do anything about this?

Try the VfW build of x264.

Indirectly I think it does. Since I just read in another post that he's planning these videos for PC playback only, there's no standalone compatibility issue, it bypasses the problem he's having, and in the end he'll have better encodes.

Do you mean this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1208832)?

I was wondering wether I should use x264 but was not sure, as everywhere is being said (well, actually written) that it's still in some sort of beta-state, and that there are problems if one wants to use it with AVI as container.

I read your thread about H.264 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96059) but still don't quite understand what makes it so special. How will I have "better encodes" in the end? (=smaller files?)

I guess the questions might be somewhat stupid this time, but I haven't done much encoding stuff before (I've always used AutoGK so far, this time however I wanted to have a higher quality and thought I might take a look at more professional tools).

Thanks!
