hi everybody,

i just tried to encode a movie on my new computer only to find out, that avisynth is crashing after a time-period ranging from 20 seconds to five minutes.
It does not really crash - it just freezes the machine, though it is running W2K - a behaviour i would expect from W98...
Also stepping back from the latest version of avisynth didn't help much.

Any clues?

You can rest assured it's not AthlonXP's problem. I've had it for a few months now and it's working like a charm with avisynth. It's hard to tell where the error is.
The "freeze the machine" sounds more like an error with your display drivers. My GeForce2 Pro on WinXP sometimes does that when i'm watching DVDs. In my case it's a problem with the newest device driver from nvidia, it's still buggy.

I bet you have a VIA chipset. I had the same problem. When installing the latest 4 in 1 driver unselect 'Turbo mode', select 'Normal mode'. For most this will be sufficient, if not, also disable AGP fast write in advanced chipset settings in the bios.

Without 'Turbo mode', but with fast write my system is now completely stable. TBird 1.4, MSI K7T266-ProR, 512 MB DDR, Geforce 2 Pro GTS

Thanks Uli, I think that might be where my problem relies. Not just the display driver but how my chipset works with the display driver. I concluded it was nvidia driver's problem solely because after reading WinXP's debugging info. I'll try the 4in1 w/o turbo mode and let you know my results

Lets face it..Nvidia's cards rock but have crapola drivers. I to have the buggy problems using my GeForce2 with WinXP but I'm running on an Intel box. I seriously doubt its a VIA issue.

I'll give it a try...

Just made a new attempt today - installed W2K totally new.
Tried to encode on the barbone system (no drivers at all) - OK
Tried to encode with NIC and VGA installed - OK
Now a new try with the SB Audigy Drivers...

thx for your help.

I tracked down the problem to the SB Audigy drivers.
Install them - Avisynth freezes the machine.
Install the newest update - same as above.
Deinstall them - also same as above.

How do I switch off the "turbo mode" in the VIA 4in1 driver?

BTW: I own a gigabyte GA-7VTXE mainboard.

I will give my old SB Player Live a try - let's see if this helps.

You have to reinstall the Via 4 in 1 drivers. The installer will give you the option to install in 'Turbo' or in 'Normal' mode. In the older versions the default was 'Normal'. The newer versions have 'Turbo' as default. So take care.

It didn't help...
Neither did using my old SB Live...

Computer still crashes - it even froze when I wanted to encode
some MP3 with lame. I am beginning to think that there is some
kind of instability at work.

I'll go back to the shop and have CPU, MB and RAM exchanged.

thx for your help

IT WORKS !!!!

The technician, who built my computer made a mistake and
forgot to add the spacer-rings when mounting the silverado-cooler...

The MB also had a malfunctioning temperature sensor.

This way 100% cpu load would drive the temperature crazy.

New MB - installed spacer rings - back in business.
