I was wondering what codecs I would need to properly play .mkv x264 files in Vista 64bit? I would like to play them in windows media player.

Just to name a few possibilities:
MPlayer (http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home/?page=projects#mplayer) -or- VLC PLayer (http://www.videolan.org/) -or- MPC-HC (http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/) -or- MPC (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205650&package_id=245753)+ffdshow (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=173941&package_id=199416)+HaaliMediaSplitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/) -or- MPC (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205650&package_id=245753)+CoreAVC (http://www.coreavc.com/)+HaaliMediaSplitter (http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/).
(Note that most of the players mentioned don't need any "external" Codecs/Decoders/Splitters to play H.264 MKV files)

great post with links and all!
i've been using the "MPC+ffdshow+HaaliMediaSplitter" combo with Vista 32bit successfully
however! i can't seem to find 64bit versions of MPC and Haali Splitter? well, unless those files work in 32bit AND 64bit

There's an experimental version of Haali's Splitter x64. You should be able to find the link somewhere on this forum. You can get x64 versions of MPC-HC (has internal splitter) and ffdshow here: http://www.xvidvideo.ru/
But the x86 versions work fine in Vista x64. AFAIK there are no real advantages of WMPx64 over WMPx86.
