View Full Version : Trying to backup DVD

I'm trying to backup the DVD 'Stranger Than Fiction' on linux. I can't play the dvd via any software players, it has garbage and green blocks across the video. These same artifacts are there after using ddrescue to create an .iso file, and are there after using DVDFAB 5 decrypter via WINE. I also tried playing the file on a windows pc, and the same blocks and artifacts appear when played with VLC. I am now trying vobcopy, it has been running for over 8 hours and has only ripped 2.8GB. It continually displays the following error:

[Warn] Had to skip (couldn't read) 2 blocks (before block 1745793)!
[Warn] Had to skip (couldn't read) 2 blocks (before block 1745799)!
[Warn] Had to skip (couldn't read) 2 blocks (before block 1745805)!
[Warn] Had to skip (couldn't read) 2 blocks (before block 1745811)!
[Warn] Had to skip (couldn't read) 2 blocks (before block 1745817)!

I'm going to let it run until it's finished. I'm just interested in tools for decrypting DVDs on linux. I have searched the forums, but the majority of the discussions focus on either encoding tools or windows tools. I'd like to try to stay linux native if possible.

Well you could try vmware (or any other emulator that you like) and run windows under linux. There are other tools for backing up dvds in linux such as k9copy, but i dont think that will work if dvdfab didnt.

@khaoohs

Hi!

Sounds like you've purchased a physically flawed DVD. Does your original DVD play properly on a standalone DVD player?

That would be my guess also as dvdfab (at least the free decrypter) works just fine for me in wine. I shrink to dvd5 with either dvdshrink or dvdrebuilder. Possibly a scratch or finger print on the disc?

you can rip the main movie using vlc or mplayer...
btw, that disc is flawed or damaged. try cleaning it.
