View Full Version : Quicktime files play on system without any codecs/filters! How?

I know this isn't the correct forum section to post this but I can't find one better...
I've downloaded a few QuickTime trailers from apple website, some in HD (in various resolutions) and others in SD and they all play on GOM Player and Media Player Classic (haven't tried any other player).
The thing is, I don't have the official QuickTime installed nor any codec pack nor QT Lite or QuickTime Alternative. I don't have these things installed but I had QT Lite, Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) and he official QuickTime installed before but I have uninstalled them all and the files still play.
How the hell are these files playing?
I need to understand this because I like to keep my system clean and there's no way these files can be played by GOM Player/Media Player Classic without any extra codecs or filters. Something wasn't uninstalled properly and I want to know what and how to remove them.

Hi!
What are the extensions of the files?

Uh... I don't have Quicktime installed either, but ffdshow and Haali Media Splitter will happily decode this trailer (http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/thespirit/medium.html), for instance.
MOV files are just souped-up MP4 files, and the trailer itself is just H.264 and AAC.
If I block Haali's splitter and ffdshow's decoders in MPC-HC it's internal splitters and decoders will happily take over (with the additional bonus of hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding), and there's no way of uninstalling those without removing MPC-HC itself, as those are compiled into it's executable... :D
(Dunno about GOM player, though...)
But anyway - just look in the "Play > Filters" menu in MPC-HC to see which filters are used for decoding a video. A look at "View > Options > Internal Filters" will show you what filters MPC-HC has built in.

@setarip_old
They are all all .mov files, trailers from the Apple website like I stated in the first post.
@Leak
It seems that both MPC and GOM are playing these files with their internal filters but this is really weird because I remember having lots of problems in the past to make GOM play QuickTimes file with their internal filters or even with QT Lite and they didn't work that's why I had QuickTime itself installed to play .mov files. But I know have uninstalled everything but both MPC and GOM play the files and I guess they are using their internal filters.
MPC:

GOM Player:
*** DIRECTSHOW FILTER LIST ***
1. Default DirectSound Device
2. VMR9 - Renderless mode
3. Gretech Audio
4. Gretech Video
5. "MainConcept (Adobe2) AAC Decoder"
6. Gretech MP4 Source
Anyway, I don't really use MPC, I was just testing it too. I use GOM Player for daily video playback. But what exactly is Haali Media Splitter? I hear so much about it but I never used it and I can play almost any file's (I think).
I'm asking this because since now QuickTime files play fine on GOM, I'll leave QT Lite installed so I can play .mov files on FireFox and was wondering if I should install CCCP or not...

It's quite simple :
Players nowadays support more and more formats out of the box (open or not, documented or not).
Quicktime use less and less proprietary crap, switching to documented standards (MPEG-4).
