Using a PC with a 2GHz CPU, 256MB or 512MB DDR-333 RAM, Windows XP Pro and either ZoomPlayer 4.03 or 5.02.

The pauses usually only occur every 5 or 10 minutes or so and are maybe a tenth of a second long, but re quite distinct and annoying. There is no desyncing of video and audio.

The AVIs in question use XviD codec and may contain either an AC3 or an mp3 audio stream. It doesn't happen with all AVIs. The AVIs are usually played back from hard-disk, though sometimes via 100Mbps LAN (6-10 MB/s transfer rates), but there is no clear correlation of problem with hardware source.

When I title search "pause" in the forums, there are 36 hits, but most have to do with DVD or VCD playback, nothing seems to fit my case closely or give me much of a clue.

Any thoughts gratefully received :)

I had to approach this problem in another way, but eventually I found the answer. See:
