Hello,
Most media players like WMP, Winamp and VLC have a feature to play streams. Is MPC able to do the same?
In the menu, I only see "Open file...".
I input the following address: http://boa.kawaii-shoujo.net:8888/stream.ogg
And I receive the following error message:
Media Player Classic could not render some of the pins in the graph, you may not have the needed codecs or filters installed on the system.
The following pin(s) failed to find a connectable filter:

Currently using MPC 6.4.9.1 (can't give a more precise file version: that's what is displayed in the "About..." window)

MPC-HC seems to have a few random issues with streaming content that are not always reproduceable. For me, this file just causes the player to say "opening..." endlessly before I end the process.

the problem is you need to use dshow filter that are optimized for streaming (source), best advice use VLC or Mplayer for such source it's not MPCs playing field yet :)

Wouldn't MPC use the same source filters for streams that WMP does use?

Yes. But WMP also supports only very few streaming formats.

Hmm, I can't get MPC-HC to render this stream. It just says "Failed to render file". But WMP does handle it just fine

I'm not happy with VLC either, because after a while the audio stutters and then disappears...

LoRd_MuldeR, it seems MPC doesn't like the mms:// . If you change that to http:// it seems to then play fine in MPC.

In fact I found out that when I download the ASX file in my browser (via http) and then directly open the mms:// address in MPC it does play the stream just fine :)
So it see MPC doesn't like to initialize a stream from ASX playlist...
(BTW: I don't think that mms:// streams are usually available via http:// too. Only the ASX file is provided via http:// address)

In my previous post, I was talking about changing mms:// to http:// in the asx file, which MPC had no issue with. For some reason it seems like after opening up the mms:// url in MPC directly and then trying to open the asx containing the mms:// url, it then works (when it didn't previously). Very odd.

If you hack the ASX file and change "mms://" to "http://" it can't work, because the ASX file would point to an invalid URL then.
However after downloading the ASX file in the web-browser, you can do two things:
* Directly open the "mms://" address obtained from the ASX in MPC
* Let MPC open the ASX file from your local drive
What does not work is: Directly open the "http://" address pointing to the ASX file in MPC.
This works in Windows Media Destructor (http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/768/wmdbk1.png) though...

Are you sure about that? I have changed many an ASX from mms:// to http:// and many times it does work, including the one you linked.
You're are right about the last part. I think I may have just confused myself assuming the ASX I downloaded wouldn't open with mms:// and changing it to http:// (which worked) without testing it with mms:// first.
Opening http://c36000-o.w.core.cdn.streamfarm.net/36000zdf/ondemand/3546zdf/zdf/3sat/08/10/081015_roche_muellmaenner_online_vh.wmv WORKS
Opening mms://c36000-o.w.core.cdn.streamfarm.net/36000zdf/ondemand/3546zdf/zdf/3sat/08/10/081015_roche_muellmaenner_online_vh.wmv WORKS
Opening from HDD 081015_roche_muellmaenner_online.asx (with mms://) WORKS
Opening from HDD 081015_roche_muellmaenner_online.asx (with http://) WORKS
Opening http://wstreaming.zdf.de/3sat/veryhigh/081015_roche_muellmaenner_online.asx DOESN'T WORK
Which I assume is also your understanding.

That will only work if the Windows Media Services server on that system has the HTTP protocol enabled. Not every server has it enabled.
Typically Windows Media Services can use 3 protocols - rtsp, mms and http. http by default is disabled in a fresh install I believe.
