View Full Version : HandBrake: No longer just for DVDs & new Linux GTK GUI

Calling all testers! HandBrake, the easy-to-use, open-source video converter, is gearing up for a new stable release with two big changes:
* A full featured GTK interface. *Not* RippedWire/HandBrakeGTK, that old Mono port of the Windows CLI frontend. This is a true GUI linked with HandBrake's core library. Screenshots: http://www.stebbins.biz/home/?q=node/2
* Universal input. It's not just for DVDs anymore. We're using libavcodec from the ffmpeg project to decode most video formats.
For debugging, we've posted pre-release snapshot builds for Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu 8.04 on our website: http://handbrake.fr/?article=snapshot

Why only a .deb for Ubuntu? A smart person would've created a generic installer wich can used on any distro.
Edit: Did you really find it neccesary to hide every XviD option from the user or will this be added in future releases?

kinematic, I've not heard of any generic "installers" that would work across distributions. The differences in distributions pretty much mandate that you would have to build from source. Anyone with the skills is welcome to do this. I'm not about to try to write a script that will figure out any given environment and try to build it for them from source.
I made a binary that I thought would reach a sufficient number of users to get feedback on the pre-release code. When it's time for a real release. I will be making an effort to accommodate more distributions. And perhaps some people will volunteer to build for platforms that I can not.

Well,
I downloaded the 0.9.2 source from:
http://handbrake.fr/?article=download
But my guess it isn't what you are talking about because I don't see much about a gtk interface. I got the source in the first place because I am a packager.

No one is "hiding" anything.
HandBrake is a library-based multimedia transcoder, not just a frontend to ffmpeg or mencoder's CLI. It's not like options are wired up and we're hiding them from the user. We interact with the xvidcore API directly.
Options, with XviD, have to be implemented on a case-by-case basis. Since none of our developers or users are very much interested in XviD in the age of x264, implementing advanced XviD options has never been a priority for the project and probably never will. If you wish to contribute a patch to add this capability, please feel free.
The reason x264 options *are* there is two-fold:
- Strong developer interest in x264
- Loren Merritt's wonderful option parsing system, where options are sent as text strings sanity-checked by libx264 directly. As far as I know, xvidcore has no equivalent to this system. It has many strengths, among them removing the burden of keeping up to date with options available in the encoder's header files.

are there any size control and determination in this tool? ie say i would like to fit onto one CD, can it determine the bitrate to do so?

I think it's for the whole file, including audio tracks.

Both are. The capacity of your CD-R/RW discs should be printed on them or the packaging.
DVD-5 is 4 GB or 4.3 ?? LOL
4.37 GB

Sweet! I am really excited about this. I just can't wait till my 64-bit Sabayon build can run it.

thanks for the replies....is it possible to lock in 720 horizontal resolution and let the algorithm dictate the vertical resolution to suit the bitrates?

I can understand this, however I must say that I am an old-time long-term Xvid User, and as far as I am concerned I still use xvid extensively. I am not saying you guys should "adjust" to xvid users at all, I am just saying that I believe there are still some xvid users out there. And Personally I am happy with "default xvid settings" all the time anyway. I am not the kind of tweak-to-get-the-most-perfect-mb ratio anyway.
Default things are fine, but if i can, I still choose Xvid over x264 any time simply because my by-now big collection of encoded .vob files is using xvid almost exclusively, with a few older divx and a few .mp4 things I forgot what codec they use... :-)

Any plans for an AMD64 version? I'm not having much luck getting the i386 version working on Ubuntu 8.10.
Thanks

I was able to get it to open under Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64 by using the GetLibs package (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=474790) to fill the dependencies. I probably won't test it until tomorrow, though. Fingers crossed!
