View Full Version : avifile merged with another soundfile

I got two files. The one with perfect picture-quality and bad sound-quality (which I now have removed with virtual dub), and another file with bad picture-quality and good sound-quality.
How do I transfer the good sound from the badpicturequality-file to the file with the goodpicturequality-file?
I'm not a professor with this subject!!

Where did you get those files from? Why not create a backup with good sound and video from the original source ???
(We can't help you until a Rule #6 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) violation can be excluded)

I got the files from a friend, which are two similar old documentaries. So I can't buy them, because they don't exist anymore. So If I could fix It the way I'm trying, It would be great.

What is the format (Video, Audio and Container) of your files? If you are not sure, load them up into Avinaptic (http://fsinapsi.altervista.org/code/avinaptic/index.html) and post the report here...

Hmm... Its in spanish?! Which one of them (avinaptic) shall I download?
The videoformat is avi and the sound is in AC3, I think.

Download the "avinaptic-20071118-full-fixed.zip", the tool will run in English language ;)
BTW: AVI is not a Video fromat, but a Container.

1. Load the AVI from which you want the audio track in Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164), set "Audio" to "Copy" and use "Audio -> Save" to save the .ac3 file
2. Close the first AVI
3. Load the AVI from which you want the video track in Avidemux, goto "Audio -> Main Track" and select the "External AC3" saved before
4. Set "Audio" as well as "Video" to "Copy" and set "Format" to "AVI", then goto "File -> Save -> Save Video"
5. That's it :)

Download latest v2.4.3 SVN build. We are at revision 4435 now (02 Oct 2008) ;)
You can get it on one of these sites:
* http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home/?page=projects#avidemux
* http://avidemux.razorbyte.com.au/#avidemux2.4
(BTW: The files on Gruntster's site and mine are identical -- I just mirror those files)

How do I set audio to copy?
There isn't any copy-option in audio??

sorry. I found out.
It says It cannot save the audio in copy mode.
Select waw pcm as the audiocodec.

Please goto "File -> Information" and post a screenshot...
EDIT: Saving an AC3 audio track in "Copy" mode to an .ac3 file works for me. Sure you used "Audio -> Save" and that it's really AC3 ???
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 01:24
I really feel stupid. Cant post a screenshot because I dont know how to even make a screenshot.
Well, maybe it isnt a ac3. I did save it as you told me.

A look at the "File -> Information" dialog could answer the question easily :p
I really feel stupid. Cant post a screenshot because I dont know how to even make a screenshot.
To take a screenshot simply press the "Print" button on your keyboard.
Then goto MS Paint and use "Edit -> Patse" and save the picture to PNG or JPG ;)

I will do what you told me, but right now I'm trying to make it with the wav-file that came out of the proces. Right now Its encoding.
I'll se what happens.
LoRd_MuldeR
4th October 2008, 01:36
You shouldn't need to re-encode at all, because every re-encode hurts quality. Also PCM/Wave will become VERY big...
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 01:42
It works now!! But.... the sound doesnt fit with the movie. :(
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 01:43
Re-encode? Damn................
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 01:45
Then I have to remove the sound from the movie again I guess, and I can't remember right now, how I did It. I think I did use virtualdub......
LoRd_MuldeR
4th October 2008, 01:48
Uhm?
All you need to do is save the audio track from file A (just save in "Copy" mode, not re-encode) and then replace the audio track of file B.
And when you edit file B, you'll of course copy the video track in "Copy" mode too. Only replace the audio track with the one extracted/saved before...
But unless you give more information, it's hard guess where the problem is .....
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 01:59
Please have patience with me. Im a real idiot :)
I discovered that I forgot to save the soundfile as ...ac3. Now there is no creating of waw-file and It seems to work now.
But the sound doesn't fit with the movie :(
LoRd_MuldeR
4th October 2008, 02:01
But the sound doesn't fit with the movie :(
Is the duration of file A and file B identical?
If the audio simply plays too early or too late, simply adjusting the delay/shift will fix it.
In case the desync increases over time, it will be MUCH harder to fix...
BTW: You still didn't post Avinaptic reports for your files. So all I can do is guess

The file with the +++ sound is :50:10

The file with the bad sound is 1:43:22

Sure they are the same movie, if file A is nearly 60 minutes longer than B ???
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 02:17
I have tried avinaptic but I dont know how It works. I simply cant navigate in that program :(
No, the times are:
1:43:22 (bad file)
1:50:10 (good file)
LoRd_MuldeR
4th October 2008, 02:36
1:43:22 (bad file)
1:50:10 (good file)
Well, this might have to reasons:
Either the shorter file is missing a part at the beginning/end -or- it's playing a bit faster.
In the first case a simple delay/shift can fix it. In the second case not...
Did you check if a delay can correct it ???
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 02:47
I hope It will after all this :)
Yes, I wonder what the reason is, because as far as I can see, exactly the same thing happens in both files??
And now back to my answering ..... how do I make a delay?
LoRd_MuldeR

Firs I have to ask about another thing.
I have discovered that I got a third file... same as the other two. This file has ok sound (too), but bad picture-quality. But the lenght of this file is 1:50:08. ALMOST same length as the file with the goodquality-picture. Will It help to use this file or does it matter?
mikkidk
4th October 2008, 02:57
without having you answer on that question I can tell you that when I pick that file in avidemux it says: "packed bitstream detected. Do you want me to unpack it?"
I don't know what that means!?

Again:
* As long as both files play at the same speed, the delay can be fixed with a simple shift
* If they play at a different speed it will be HARD to fix, because the desync increases over time
And please post Avinaptic reports for all three files, so I don't have to guess all the time.
It shouldn't be to hard to do "File -> Open" and "File -> Save the report", right ???

It means that the file uses some ugly hack to the AVI format that shouldn't exists at all. You should unpack the AVI file, it's a lossless process...

The info of B (good sound) is:
25.000 fps
framecount: 155068
xvid

Obviously file A and B have the same framerate, but a different number of frames.
Conclusion: File B is missing a part that is present in A.
I'd guess B is missing a part at the beginning and/or at the end. If it's in the middle, then you have another problem...

Well, it seems duration as well as framerate of A and C match. So you might come to a success easier with those.
However the audio format of C is uncompressed PCM, it's not AC3.

Can I do anything about that?
Open file C, set "Audio" to "AC3 (Aften)", goto "Audio -> Save" and save the .ac3 file.
Finally merge it with file A as described before. And set the proper delay if needed...
