I use Media Player Classic (6.4.9.0) and ffdshow to play most files. I have the most recent version of clsid's ffdshow (20080924, rev 2144) installed and it is set to handle Xvid, Divx (all versions) and other Mpeg4.
Until now, I haven't had any problem playing files encoded with Xvid, however I recently downloaded a file that won't play the video in MPC. Even though the Filters menu claims that the ffdshow video decoder is being used, the ffdshow icon never appears in the system tray.
Strangely, GSpot has no problem playing the file and ffdshow's icon DOES appear in the system tray. Because of this, I know that the video stream is good. It also plays in GOM Player, which has built-in support for Divx/Xvid.
Here is what GSpot shows about this file;

Does anyone have any idea why GSpot will call ffdshow and play the video, but MPC only plays the audio?
