i guess i need to post this here. really wanted to put this in the AVC section, but i guess this is the most appropriate.
supposedly the following short film was done with NO POST PRODUCTION, picture-wise. even with my small knowledge of post production, it COMPLETELY blows my mind...

raw footage (AVC) is supposedly coming soon...
here's some (stills) samples from a 5D Mark II from someone else: http://rapidshare.com/files/147947284/5D_markII_pic-samples.rar.html

Saw that on Canons' website.
I'm considering going into debt to buy one these cameras :)
My Rebel XTi is good, but a full frame 21mp sensor and 1080p30 recording to 40mbps AVC sounds absolutely amazing.

a free choice between several framerates like 24 (23.976), 25, 30 (29.97), 50 and 60 (59.94) would have been even more nicer.
AFAIK all digital still cameras only support 30fps framerate.

Yeah, it would be very nice if they had 24p, or even 60i.
30p isn't half bad, though it makes getting either the nice film 24p look or the clean video 60i look almost impossible :|
Oh well. Full-frame depth of field control and EF lenses, plus a 21mp sensor makes for one hell of an attractive package!!
Not a RED, but still nifty :)

leave a comment with a vote for 24p/25p in the impromptu/casual petition.
the $1000 prosumer(?) Nikon can do 24p, but it's only 720p...

just remember, there's no audio capture. it has to be done, pro-style (slate/slapper or other noisemaker)

There is audio capture actually, but it's with a silly little built in mic that's good for almost nothing.

I think it is the Nikon D90.
the footage (some shots i saw on vimeo) looks pretty amazing, any 1st hand experience?
for the canon, this seems to be the specs;
1920 x 1080 (16:9) up to 12 mins (Quicktime 1080p H.264; 38.6 Mbits/sec), 640 x 480 (4:3) up to 24 mins (Quicktime 480p H.264; 17.3 Mbits/sec), Max file size 4 GB, Quicktime MOV format (H.264 video, PCM sound), 30 fps,

i was only relaying a (semi-pro's) experience from that impromtu petition (about the existance of 24p from the Nikon). i know nothing of the quality or workings of said feature, unfortunately.

ah, didn't know that. thanks for info! :) in the future, i'll try to remember to say "according to Forum Xx,..."

i got some raw footage of d90 from the net, compression seems to be some sort of VBR mjpeg and it does look very cool, seems way better than any hdv i saw so far (which is weird, since all klips are under 20 mbits).

Yes, MJPEG would be much better than MPEG-2 at 25mbps :)
Consider that the 5D MkII shoots at 40mbps H.264. That's nearly 2x the bitrate of BluRay or AVCHD, and the same for HDV, plus a light-years better codec ;)
I looked at some samples from DPReview, and brought them in to AVISynth with CoreAVC. In composite view, the samples were quite nice, with no visible blocking, banding, or ugly grain. Looking at the luma histogram reveals a fair amount of blocking and some noise, but it was easily cleaned with fft3dgpu and gradfun2db.
In short, I think AVC at 40mbps is a fantastic acquisition format. It's not R3D or anything, but it's quite good, compared to other low-cost alternatives.
$2700 for a body that shoots this kind of video (on to cheap CF cards, or tethered via USB), and can do it all with EF mount lenses?? Man.. Show me a better alternative in that price range!
