it's ASD's Metamophosis (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=50127) (and Midnight Run (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=51450)). 2D. it uses small repeating patterns, but it repeats in such a small space, the encoder probably can't "move" it very well... efficiency improves in (a part of) Midnight Run where the repeated pattern takes up more room...
http://plonkmedia.org/demoscene/asd-metamorphasis-midnightrun-6400-av.mp4 (note: encode is not a final encode .. need to fix something as well as test higher bitrates for quality to be up to MY personal liking...)
not sure if it's useful or anything .. and/or how it compares to Touhou (http://mirror05.x264.nl/Dark/website/compare.html)

Needs a more recent version of x264 and b-adapt 2 and b-pyramid and more refs and... etc etc :p
(Actually, looking at the long strings of P-frames, it does indeed need some b-adapt 2).

can you also post a lossless encode or the source?

i try to avoid b-pyramid (max hardware and player PC/Mac and standalone (PS3 for me) compatibility), but i wouldn't mind playing with other options...
i pretty much stick to MeGUI (don't hate me) defaults except for Ref frames, sub pixel refinement, and B-frames .. and well, i guess you can see ;/
sharktooth: is there a certain section you want? it may take a while to upload... (whole thing is 21.2gb, PNGed)
you can also download the demo, then use .kkapture (http://www.farb-rausch.de/~fg/kkapture/) ..and you can even set what framerate you wish (1-60+fps)

cool, i'd prefer the demo then :)

:)
meh! 5 character minimum?!
edit: i think the first needs a geforce to run, unless i'm thinking of the wrong demo... (a 6200, maybe even a 5200 should suffice, tho)
edit2: if you want me to post certain sections, let me know. i'd be glad to do that as well...

was this useful at all? or is it something that would come up so rarely that it is of little use?

Okay, here are some results on the "Metamorphosis" clip:
* Initial capture 1680x1050 @ 30 fps came out at 4,66 GB using FFV1 lossless compression
* Re-encode with x264 lossless (High 4:4:4 Predictive profile) came out at 3,04 GB
CoreAVC is able to play that smoothly on my system, while I can't play the FFV1 version :)

(I assume on FFV1 you were using YV12 also, not RGB?)

Yes, Sir.

last i tested even x264's 4:2:0 "lossless" compression couldn't compare to even PNGs .. i'll test it out again, tho
edit: interesting...
PNGs ~12.7gb
4:2:0 lossless 4.1gb
(Metamorphosis at 720p60)
at the beginning of summer, it was 112mb for all of Die Ewigkeit Schmerzt in PNG, 131 or 127mb at best with x264...
