I recorded something on to my DVD recorder AGES ago which I no longer have any where else and I really need it.
It was 2 videos and the 2nd one is OK but the first one won't "rip" with any software, I can copy it to my PC and PowerDVD plays it fine but nothing else will, not even VLC, no messages, just doesn't play
I need to edit or convert it to a format I can use and have tried and failed with the following:
Premiere, Nero (video OK but no audio!), Super, ConvertXtoDVD, Total video converter, ULead/Corel DVD Movie factory, VideoReDo Plus, TMPGEnc, Vegas Pro 8, TuneBite & ProCoder (both TuneBite & Procoder only see audio, no video)
With PowerDVD playing it fine I got hold of PowerDirector but that won't open it either
I really need this (in DVD quality) so any help would be appreciated

What kind of files are? AVI? MPG? DVD structure (VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS)?
If they are a DVD structure, have you tried demuxing video (m2v) and audio (ac3/mp3) streams? You can use ReJig or DVD Decrypter.
If they are "single" files (even if they are VOBs), try with AVStoDVD and, if it fails, post here the log file.
;)

it's a vob
AVStoDVD says file format not recognised (same as programmes like VideoReDo)

Hi!
1) Load the problematic file into GSpot and post a screen capture back here
2) What is the brand and model number of your DVD recorder. I ask because I've never heard of a recorder that records ONLY .VOBs, without generating .IFOs and .BUPs, all as part of a standard DVD package

it doesn't record only VOBs, it's just only the VOB I'm working with, I have all files on my PC, I can do stuff with the 2nd VOB, just the 1st one has problems (seems to have a bit of the menu in the 1st frame)
No DVD ripping/splitting etc software recognises it as a DVD for some reason (but PowerDVD plays it fine with menu etc)

I get that when my recorder loses power while recording. The disk is not finalized and the software in the recorder cannot finalize it after that but can play it, so it's useless anywhere else. If you find a solution let me know. :)

@mmace
GSpot is not recognizing the file as a .VOB. Look in the "Container" section of your screen capture. Instead of saying something like:DVD "VOB" format
MPEG-2 Program Stream << { 1 vid, 3 aud }
Sys Bitrate: 10080 kb/s VBR yours states:MPEG Elementary video << {1 vid} If the speculation by "neuron2" is correct, you might try using either your recorder or DVD Decrypter to finalize the disc.
On the other hand, you might try changing the extender of the problematic file from ".VOB" to ".MPG"...
