View Full Version : How do I edit an M2V (MPEG-2) file without recompress?

Hi,
In the past I captured some DV video from my camcorder and used Cyberlink PowerDirector to create a home DVD. Now, I need to do some cutting to that DVD and create new DVD.
I don't have the original files so I used DVD Decrypter to extract the audio and video from the DVD, thus creating one WAV file and one M2V file.
Basically, I need to cut a few minutes in the end and then fade the image to black and at the same time fade the sound to 0dB. I've done this on Adobe Premiere but to save the changes I had to reencode the file and I didn't really want that because I lost a bit of quality (I notice much more "pixel blocks" on the recompress).
Is there any way, any software that could help me avoid this recompress problem?
Probably there isn't any that allows me to fade to black and also fade the sound without recompress. But what if I split the original file into 2 parts, with the last one starting at the frame I want to start fading til the end. Recompress only that second part and merge back the 2 parts? This would make for a nice workaround. But I have no idea how could I split and merge 2 mpeg files without recompress.
Any ideas? Or any other idea different from mine?

Not to forget about Cuttermaran and MPEG2Schnitt:

MPEG2Schnitt is only in german though.
@Revgen: No offence but I find ProjectX horrible for cutting :-/

I now have the final MPG file with everything in place and minimal recompress. But now I have a different problem... I'm trying to use Adobe Encore to create a simple DVD, I mean, no menus whatsoever, simply start playing the video with a few chapters, that's it. However, when I try to build the final DVD, it starts transcoding the video file. I don't know exactly what this means but it's taking too long and I have a feeling the video is getting recompressed...
Is there anything that can be done in Adobe Encore? Or do you suggest a different software to create the final DVD? Just so you don't forget, I want to minimize the recompression...

Muxman (free).
TMPGEnc DVD Author (commercial).
Maybe even DVD Flick (not sure about that).

I agree that it has a horrible user interface, but tends to be more accurate, especially for HDTV TS streams.
In my experience, it's not uncommon for MPEG Video Wizard, Video ReDo, DGIndex or other apps to fail while ProjectX succeeds.

@neuron2
Are you sure muxman is free? I didn't see that on their webpage...
Anyway, I won't be able to test those apps until next weekend when I get home (university during the week).

The GUI kinda sucks though... But thanks for the suggestions. If you want a full polished program it's time to break out the wallet. GUIs are for wimps. :)

You can use AVStoDVD.
It will eventually transcode (not recompress) the video to fit DVD space and it will author (using MuxMan) with no menu or with simple menu.
;)
