Ok, i've been reading, and now i'm even more confused than when i started. i'm trying to get a set of ripped vobs to cce to re-encode and then go back to dvd-r. I would like to keep the color/frame rate the same as the original. open a vob up with bitrate, says its 720x480,29.97 fr, progressive. Load vobs in dvd2avi, set the field operation to 'none'.press F5. Says 29.97 fr, film 99%, progressive, but the video looks interlaced. When i play it in powerdvd, it doesn't look interlaced at all. If i set it to 'forced film', the fr drops to 24, film 99%, progressive. The video looks better (non-interlaced), but it looks to be playing at a faster than 1x speed. What does all this mean? Knowing that I want to go to cce, what steps/settings do I need to make? Sorry for the newbie questions, but I just can't seem to understand. Can someone please, please tell me in dumb english.
Thanks in advance.

dvd2avi provides a preview feature, but it isn't a player. It provides preview as fast as it can, and I believe it changes the preview based on some of the settings.
For example, if you set field operation to none, I believe the preview function honors the rff/tff flags in the mpg stream, which has the effect of inserting interlaced frames. It doesn't do anything to eliminate the combing in these interlaced frames (which I think software dvd players do). And since the preview is 29.97 fps, this is what the stats window shows.
If you set field operation to force film, the preview function ignores the rff/tff flags, plus it decimates frames in sections where there are no rff/tff flags. Generally, this results in all progressive frames, though interlaced frames can appear in those 'no rff/tff' sections (which hopefully are few and short). Because the stream is now *forced* to 23.97 fps, the stats window now shows 23.97 fps.
And again, preview is as fast as your computer will allow. You'll see a preview frame-per-second stat near the bottom of the stats window, so you can tell just how fast your computer is going. On my 1 GHz PIII, I typically see preview fps of about 40, but it has gone as high as 59.
As for going to CCE, I suggest you find the appropriate doom9 guide. Describing the entire process from dvd2avi through a finished CCE mpv is more than can easily be described in one forum reply.
