I've been noticing for the past while that I can't find any Verbatim -R DL disks anywhere in my area. Staples has always carried them along with other box stores and computer shops. I've asked but they have no answer as to why they're not available. They have good stock on the Verbatim +R DL's, and they're actually fairly cheap. Problem being, the +R's are not compatible with any of my players, although my players are new, and can play the -R DL's with no problems. Are they discontinuing the -R's ?

In the time when DVD(+/-)R DL discs were introduced most players could only play DVD-ROM DL, but neither DVD+R DL nor DVD-R DL. For DVD-R (DL) there is no burner which supports bitsetting (change the booktype to DVD-ROM (DL)). For DVD+R DL almost every burner does this. That's why must older dvd-players can play +R DL, but not -R DL. I think that's the reason why most people take +R DL.
The shops I usually buy my discs have both formats.

Would you please state the brands and model numbers of your players and burner(s)?

Especially since standalone players (especially older ones) would prefer +Rs anyway, due to the ability to set booktype and closer reflectivity to a pressed DVD.

Does the same principle (regarding compatibility with ropey old DVD players) apply to single-layer DVDR disks?

Hi!
With regard to older players, it's really on an individual brand/model basis. Some would play ONLY DVD-Rs, some would play ONLY DVD+Rs, and still others (notably VERY old Toshibas) would play neither...

Yes, bitset DVD+Rs are more compatible than non-bitset ones.
If your equipment supports it it's recommended practice to always use bitsetting/booktyping with DVD+Rs.
