View Full Version : Camcorder video files show green line on both sides upon repeat

Okay, now I've searched around and found a few issues people were having with green lines and video, but no one seems to have had my problem, which is really elusive and obscure, at least to what's causing it.

I have a JVC Everio 30GB hard drive camcorder and have shot quite a few movies with it and have played back the videos on my pc with no problem in the past.
But that was then (XP Pro), and this is now (Vista Ultimate 32bit).

I recently transferred a bunch of Grand Canyon videos to my computer and the FIRST time I play them in WMP 11, they play fine with no trace of the green borders on both sides. But I usually watch the file more than once, so I keep WMP 11 on 'Repeat' and the SECOND time -- and every time after that, until I close WMP 11 -- I get green borders on either side of the video. It's not even that noticeable, or at least wasn't before with my aging 19" CRT, but I recently got a 26" Samsung LCD and now I can't stop looking at those stupid lines.

Here's what I deduced:

I have Vista Codec Pack 4.72 installed (the BEST for Vista, IMO) which gives me thumbnails in Explorer for ALL my video files as well as thumbnails in WMPs library & allows me to use WMP 11 for all video playback, including matroska & mp4 files. I'm one of those geeks that likes using one app for everything, if possible...

I've also used the Vista Media Decoder Utility to deselect Microsoft's MPEG2 Decoder and select Cyberlink's decoder with Blu-Ray support.

Now here's the key thing I noticed -- with Vista, if I have hardware acceleration enabled for my Cyberlink decoder, then I DON'T have the green borderlines on my camcorder videos. This is also true for the Microsoft MPEG2 decoder, which has hardware acceleration enabled by default. Vista loves hardware acceleration.

Except it makes my videos look terrible. Clearer in some ways, but pulsing and shifty in others. Just doesn't look natural at all so hardware acceleration must be gone. Also makes interlacing in DVDs quite noticeable, so it sucks for that too.

In XP Pro, the same Cyberlink codec did not give my videos the green border edges, even though hardware acceleration was NOT enabled. But as I said, Vista really loves hardware acceleration and seems to get testy without it in some cases...

Anyway, that's my issue, and I don't really expect anyone to have a solution - but JUST IN CASE someone has experienced this and has solved it, I thought I'd pose the problem here.

Any info or help would be greatly appreciated -- thanks in advance...!
