Think the q9550 would run faster than the new Core i7 800 on x264? Release date (http://xtreview.com/addcomment-id-6271-view-core-i7-processor-release-date.html) is Nov 9. I'm unsure as the new i7 800 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_i7) would be able to simultaneously multithread (4 cores = 8 threads) but the q9550 would have a faster clock. I ask because I've yet to actually purchase the pc I've been yacking about and asking questions for. I was actually about to purchase it today until I found a couple articles regarding the new i7's. So.. what would some of the more experienced have to say to the young grasshopper?

EDIT: Ahhh!!!!! just found this (http://www.techpowerup.com/img/08-07-09/5.jpg) link. Is crying allowed in the forum. I'm unsure if it would be in happiness or sadness.

Lastly, when these come out should we see another price drop in the quads?

The i7 is supposedly around 30 percent faster for the same clock as a Penryn, aka q9550 processor. The problem faced with the i7 though is product maturity, at first its not going to be a mainstream processor. Even if you go for the cheapest i7 (which is quite reasonably priced from what I've seen, at say $280 or something), its the rest of the components that you have contend with... Triple channel memory would be good, so you would need at least 3x2gb ddr3-1066 chips to get any benefit, then if you want to overclock you'll need to go ddr3-1333 or something, which costs a lot more. Not to mention the cost of the motherboard...

A BIG issue with the i7 is overclocking performance is hard to find! You don't want to be spending all that money on an i7 to find the overclocking performance is woeful. If you can overclock a Penryn 40 percent and the i7 only 10 percent (purely a hypothetical number) then you basically wipe out the performance difference between them! Its interesting that they are not properly released till October? next year, it sounds like there may be a few performance issues etc to work out. By then the next chipset on from the X58 is likely, as well as a new stepping for the i7 cpu itself! You can then get the full blown windows 7 (its really Windows 6.1, but since the negativity around Vista 7 sounds better)! as that would probably be out by then. If they do release a 32 bit version avoid it, as you will not get the full benefits of the i7 from using it!

If you already have a good motherboard, ram, etc etc even a q9400 would be good, as it is modern and lease its surrounding parts are fairly cheap. In Australian dollars, a good p45 DDR2 motherboard is the p5q, OCZ 4GB ddr21066 RAM is around $120 or so, etc etc. at least you won't be spending more on the ram and motherboard than on the CPU!

ANOTHER disadvantage with the i7 is that it will require new third party fans for overclocking, something that won't be out come November limiting your overclocking potential.

I'm not a fan of overclocking. Probably because (1) I dont know how to do it, and (2) I need my cpu to last me awhile and oc'ing brings down life span of the cpu.

they are actually released Q4 of this year. So sometime very very soon. But only the i7 800, 900, and 900 extreme will be released until (i think) Q2 next year when more mainstream processors come out (also with the i in front of them).

why would you stick with 4 cores when you can have six of them

What I meant by properly is mainstream... The i7 800 has got a very good price on it, but considering the price of the motherboard and the RAM (considering you should make use of the triple channel memory with 3x2gb good DDR3-1066 (minimum) RAM... at the moment it may not be worthwhile price wise. The motherboard could well be more expensive than the CPU, at least for the moment!

I'm not saying don't get one, just that it may not be economical in the medium term to do so!...
