any of you guys has used the coded before? I set my bitrate to 700kbit and the projected filesize after a couple 1000 frames was 2gb.. that's definitely not what I want.. in the codec config all I can see is stuff that concerns the keyframes, and an overall bitrate. how do I make the codec stick to the bitrate I want?
also.. the codec is really slow, right? and works in both yuv2 and rgb input.
what is quick compression?
and last but not least.. my output is in black & white..
btw.. we pruned the old threads about vp3 so I have to ask again..

Hi
VP3 bitrate works in Kbytes instead of Kbits
I check quick compress because it's 2x faster and i don't notice loss of quality
"Quick Compress
Determines how much time the compressor spends correlating motion. Un-checking this box provides video that is about 1-2 % better than having it checked, but takes nearly twice as much time to compress. "
Ask Blacksun for the Black and White output, he got the problem and solved it (I don't remember, maybe just uninstall and reinstall of the codec)
Tip from someone of VP3 forum, to have a 'sharper' image, try do don't use hardware acceleration in WMP options

Yes the codec use Kbytes instead of kbit. About the black and white problem, if I remember I unregistered the DirecShow Filter called TrueMotion. I don't remember the filename, but you'll find it if you look in the original archives.
And the major problem is the encoding speed, I only have 2-3 fps on my Duron700

but.. if you disable that filter you have no filtering, right?
I unregistered on2.ax.. but now I have no picture during playback.. that's no good either. the video still comes up in virtualdub (even in color) but I need a way to watch it properly or I can't include it in the test.

Doom, register on2.ax again and try to use WMP 8

I'll check this this evening and will post the result tomorrow...

peters: that actually work. but there will be a big point deduction for the inability to be played properly in wmp6.4... I mean huge. I loathe wmp8... bloated crapware

Yes, you must be right.
By the way, if you have B&W, i think you got a nvidia card, true?
I got this pb once and one day bingo! colors..
But what is the reason? i don't know, really.
I tried so many things, reinstall vp31 codec, xp geforce drivers and so on..
from vp3 forum

The shock is over: I completely removed ZoomPlayer 2.10 and installed ZoomPlayer 2.12 - now it is playing fine. Maybe it was a problem in the configuration files, but it seems to be fixed."

I visted the forum, too. And there was another thread about it.. that had no answer. I'm certainly not going to reinstall my box just for a codec

:) of course!
There are some things strange with this codec. By example, using avisynth you can encode in both yuv2 and rgb input.
But if you want to encode directly from DVD2AVI, only RGB works..

hmm.. I'm encoding using avisynth and mpeg2dec (so my source is dvd2avi).. in yuv/fast recompress mode.. and it works just fine. I did a 10000 frames test prior to starting the whole movie and the result was good. I guess they have severe problems running it consistently on different boxes... maybe that's the reason why they open sourced it.. and they're not giving out any vp4 soft to test to anyone (they didn't even bothered to reply to my request for a review copy) so all there is is there hype.. I'm very critical of companies that have nothing but words to praise their products... I think it takes more than words to convince video pros to use a certain codec

Doom, yes it works fine with avisynth but if you save an avi from DVD2AVI , in YUV mode the VP3 codec is not shown (i see Divx 3.11, Divx 4.12, Huffyuv)

I found the problem, and fixed this in a alpha release of PowerDivX 4. The problem is WinXP and the VMR renderer...
Doom9, check your PM
Edit: check Use the alternate video renderer in PowerDivX

Great job Blacksun!
Just because i'm curious, did you got an idea for the impossibility to 'see' the vp3 codec in YUV mode when encoding from DVD2AVi ?
[French mode]
C juste de la curiosité Blacksun mais j'avoue que cela m'intrigue. Pourquoi diable on ne peut pas encoder directement depuis DVD2AVI en YUV mode alors que l'on peut si on passe par avisynth? As tu une explication? Merci

I guess the codec is only RGB...

@doom9: you didn't tell me if PowerDivX fix your problem ?

sorry.. haven't tested it yet.. still encoding around the clock (except for my bedtime.. then it's resttime for my comp as well)

I got again this B&W problem and i solved it
- Using Radlight or
- Using WMP 6.4 with DivxG400

I cant find anywhere where you can set the desired bitrate value for the vp3 codec. How are you supposed to set the bitrate for the codec? Is there a trick to it or something. thanks.http://www.crosswinds.net/~wrpt/vp3.2.1settings.gif

When you select Video Compression, check "Use target data rate of"
Pay attention that it's Kbytes/s and not Kbits/s

Could you please explain that a little better. Select Video Compression from where where? Im using xmpeg 4.2a and i know how to select the vp3 video compression for the avi but i dont see any place where i can check "use target data rate of".
