Hi, for ages I've been using TMPGenc Xpress (now version 4), and I used to be happy with the results, but as I've gotten more discriminating, I've started to notice some bugs.
I usually capture from VHS sources, then I adjust the colour using TMPGenc, normally:
- Taking reds and greens down, boost blue
- Up the contrast, down the brightness
- Up the gamma
- Shift the chroma channels to the right (colour phase adjustment)
I try to minimise the amount of processing needed by getting the levels correct from my VCR in the first place, but some adjustment is always needed.
The problem is that TMPGenc has a bug when working on interlaced sources (please back me up, anyone else who has this problem, I've only noticed it on the colour red, but might happen with other colours). If you input and output interlaced, every top field has its red colours shifted (it seems to be using the previous field's red chroma values).
I thought it was just some setting I was using, but after an afternoon of testing (raw output, no filters, interlaced to interlaced, using AVS files, yadif(bob) and the histogram() function to asses change), it does indeed seem that the preview window given you in TMPGenc is not quite faithful, and that some colour shifting/clipping is occurring.
So, anyone, please:
- Verify this result for yourselves (I can post samples if need be), I want to see if this is just my computer or TMPGenc in general
- Please point me to a virtualdub filter that can balance colour as easily as TMPGenc (hopefully one that is AVIsynth friendly!)
Thanks very much!
