View Full Version : Input DAR

Simple question: the value filled in "Input DAR" after loading the movie in script creator is selected automatically based on the source? Shall I trust it? Because when I click next to it, there's this "clear user-selected ARs" and 16:9 PAL is selected, which seems better (the source is widescreen indeed). Not sure what 1,778 stands for. Is there a "complete" list of ARs so I can consult that?

Hi!Not sure what 1,778 stands for.16 divided by 9 equals 1.778 - Or,the ratio 16:9 is the same as the ratio 1.778:1

rofl, what an idiot I am :D
So it is detected from the source! Right?

What's confusing though - the 16:9 PAL has (1.823361) behind it. What's that? I'm so confused!

edit: is there a guide around about DAR vs SAR etc.? I still am unsure about those two.

Nice guide. But PAR??? Ughhh....!!! What's par to DAR/SAR? I'm even more confused. lol

DAR is ratio that tells how the video is to be displayed, PAR is pixel aspect ratio, say clips with different PAR can have same DAR. SAR have multiple meanings, but in x264 terms equals PAR (i think).

example: klip with PAR 1 (could have 1024x576 pixels) will have same DAR as klip with PAR 1.422 (could have 720x576 pixels)

Ahh! I see. This all started some months ago when DVD encodes I made displayed in totally weird AR. Then I learned about the --sar parameter for x264 and ever since was also wondering in what cases do I not need to add it; this partially resulted in being curious in the whole deal :)

Shall I trust it?

You mean MeGUI? IIRC it fails on 1440x1080 anamorphic, SD width 704, probably more. It makes assumptions about the source DAR but often this is not sufficient.

How do I tell the proper numbers then?

Either you calculate manually or use a application which calculates correctly.

Calculate? But how?
If you could give me an exampleof such app I'd greatly appreciate it!

Um, I have absolutely no idea how to work with it or what's it good for. Call me an idiot but I don't get it.

Indeed... what-ever happened to following forum rule 1a?

It's not too obvious when you haven't got a clue about the subject. I usually am told, in very rude way (not like this is the case!!) to go fcking google and piss off. It's hard to look for something when you don't know what to look for.

with some googling you can get plenty of tools like that:
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/resizecalc.html
the new vdub filter should be able to do similar
http://www.virtualdub.org/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=95
ect...

i suggest you do some additional reading and then compare the results from various tools (with your manual calculations).
