Tried to install ATI 8.8 on my Win XP SP3 box but got a BSOD during the install - repeated attempts turned out the same. 8.7 installed OK, but the ATI drivers are rubbish and unstable. This is my first (and likely last) ATI GPU.

... and what windows have in common with linux?
actually ati users are having great times on linux since this: http://ati.amd.com/products/catalyst/linux.html#4
however if you get BSODs on windows during install than your system is really screwed up... no one that i know with an ati card had such a problem and it wasnt reported by any tech website...
btw, fix your system before saying rubbish, unstable, etc...

I got it orking and I am very happy with my cube(see compiz-manager).
Gerard V perhaps you should try and use envy in linux. It will install anything without any hassle at all.
Then again, if you are a windows user, then your remark is most certainly not in the right place as this is the linux subforum... And how could windows' driver be problematic? I find it quite bizarre...
I'm sorry, but I'm gonna have to agree with Sharkooth.
