I want to convert my dvd collection into x264 mkv files.

I want to pick the settings that will give me the closest to the original video quality as possible (time is no problem).

I was looking at ripbot264 - how do these settings look?

the only other option i have checked under properties is "automatic crop"

I am looking to do this is once becuase it'll be time consuming and want to get it right the first time. As I said time & file size (as long as it's smaller than source) is no problem.

Careful there, you're not allowed to ask what's "best" (rule 12). I'd edit your post so it doesn't mention that.

I want to convert my dvd collection into x264 mkv files. I want to use the absolute best video settings (time is no problem).

I was looking at ripbot264 - are these the best setting for video quality?

WOW, that post is a blatant disregard to rule 12!

How would you describe "best"?
How would you know the difference between what's "best" and what's not?
Be very very specific in your answers. :D

In this case, your user name seems appropriate.

sorry about that, i edited my post. I'm just looking for the right settings to get as close to the original source as possible.

If you're looking for transparency, you can drop esa down to umh because it's a complete waste of time. You're better off pumping up other settings (refs, b-frames with new b-adapt patch) to max then using esa.

Also, one of the 4x4 macroblock options was somewhat shot down as being ineffective, or bad (can't remember the gist). The info is in either they psyRD thread, or the current patches thread.

p4x4 may help when used with sub-SD resolution sources; has almost no benefit at higher resolutions.

p4x4 is useless mostly, and I'd recommend enabling trellis 2 with the psy-rd patched builds.

the hardware devices often do not support p4x4 as well, why it's not included in megui's hardware compatible profiles.

Blu-ray and DXVA cards have no problem with them.

Lower the CRF until you can't see any difference to the original. Then change the other options until you find your speed/size balance. This means TEST.

If that's still too large for you, then you're not going to get "as close to the original source as possible", so be even more specific.
